      <content:encoded><![CDATA[Loneliness is on the rise. *Almost a third of people in the UK already feel lonelier since the pandemic. *Disconnected communities could be costing the UK economy £32 billion every year. This can be exacerbated by the cost-of-living crisis, which hinders social interaction.

A leading loneliness charity, Marmalade Trust, is launching its 7th annual campaign, Loneliness Awareness Week 2023, dedicated to raising awareness of loneliness across the UK and worldwide. Taking place from June 12th to 18th, this year's campaign, 'Connection Matters,' aims to get people to notice and encourage small everyday connection moments to reduce feelings of loneliness and increase connection. 
<br>

<br>
By highlighting the need for people to reach out to each other and share even the smallest moments of connection, we can support ourselves and others to feel acknowledged, happier and reduce loneliness.
<br>

<br>
Marmalade Trust calls on everyone to strive for a future where open conversations about loneliness are commonplace. This empowers individuals to share their emotions and strengthen social connections. 
<br>

<br>
During Loneliness Awareness Week, we encourage individuals, businesses, organisations, and community groups to join us in creating supportive communities by harnessing and sharing moments that matter and initiating conversations about loneliness with family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. 
<br>

Alice Peperell, Campaign Director of Loneliness Awareness Week, describes three simple ways people can get involved,

“We are asking people to join in by spreading the word, building connections by organising or joining an activity or event, and following us on social media and sharing stories of connection.”

Minister for Loneliness Stuart Andrew said:

"Loneliness is something that can affect anyone at any time, but it’s important people know that they are not alone and that support is out there. This Loneliness Awareness Week is the perfect opportunity to encourage small moments of connection, whether that be arranging to go for a walk with a friend or inviting them for a tea or coffee. By opening up the conversation about how we are feeling we can better support each other."

Soap star Anthony Quinlan underwent a hair transplant at the Farjo Hair Institute’s flagship clinic in Manchester

The FUE procedure was carried out by eminent surgeon Dr Greg Williams and involved 1926 follicular unit grafts 
<br>

Quinlan is delighted with the ‘drastic results’ and would encourage anyone thinking about hair transplant surgery to book in for a consultation

Actor and soap star, Anthony Quinlan, is best known for his roles as Gilly Roach in Hollyoaks, as well as Pete Barton in Emmerdale. Like thousands of other men, he started to notice hair loss in his late twenties and decided to do something about it, for both personal reasons and for his career. 
<br>

<br>

<br>
“I think I was around the age of 27 when I first noticed that my hair was starting to thin,” says Quinlan. 
<br>

<br>

<br>
“As well as the physical aspect, it was also starting to affect me mentally. Working in the acting industry there’s often a lot of heavy lighting and I was finding it embarrassing that the makeup team would have to fill in my hair on set.” 
<br>

<br>

<br>
As well as the impact it was having on his career, the actor also found himself becoming increasingly aware of his hair loss outside of work too. 
<br>

<br>

<br>
“It was starting to affect me on a daily basis; I felt very self-conscious about the hair loss whenever I would go out.” 
<br>

<br>

<br>

<br>
That’s why he decided to call upon the Farjo Hair Institute, one of the most respected hair transplant clinics in the country who are renowned for their natural looking hair transplant results, as well as their long list of VIP clientele. 
<br>

Dr Greg Williams, a distinguished Hair Transplant Surgeon at the Farjo Hair Institute, carried out Anthony’s procedure.

“Anthony came to the Farjo Hair Institute in 2017 to see what his options were when it came to his hair loss on the recommendation of his good friend and Emmerdale colleague, Chris Bisson. After a thorough consultation with myself, we decided that the first priority is to ensure that the loss has stabilised first through medical therapy. Anthony came back a year later in 2018 and we agreed that a follicular unit excision (FUE) procedure would be the best route forward. We carried out his 7-hour operation which involved 1926 grafts into the affected areas. His results are fantastic and I’m thrilled he’s regained his confidence”

“I think when you look at the before and after photos you can see that I’ve had a pretty impressive result. I’m really pleased and I no longer have the heavy lighting issues on set anymore either! If help is needed or the member doesn’t respond within a five-minute grace period, all Circle members and emergency contacts are notified via a text message with the user’s exact location. The app notification will also play a unique sound on the phone that will repeat for either 10 minutes or until the notification is acted upon. Of course, no one ever expects to be in a car crash, but the truth is that they happen more often than you might think and the time it takes to get help is critical.

Enhanced SOS, which means that after triggering an SOS Alert, a 10 second countdown will begin, after which Life360 will call and text all Circle members and emergency contacts for the Circle the alert was triggered in. Circle members will also receive a push notification. The phone call and text message will say where the user was when the SOS Alert was triggered. SOS alerts are available to all Life360 users, meaning parents of all ages, including new drivers and university students, can be reassured that if a loved one requires emergency assistance but can’t contact 999 because they are unable to talk on the phone, Life360 can help.

The Tile integration allows Life360 users’ entire "Circle" of family and friends to see the location of important items within their Life360 map. Life360 members will automatically be able to see Tile and Tile-enabled products' last reported location, so everyone in their Circle can easily locate shared items or help each other retrieve something that's been misplaced. Tiles can be attached to everyday essentials like bikes, keys, wallets, bags, and more.

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[The search is on for an outstanding postgraduate student, researching cancer at a UK university, to win up to £12,000 in funding. The deadline is August 31, 2023, so time is of the essence!

Red Trouser Day, a UK bowel/colorectal cancer charity, run by volunteers, has put out the call to postgraduate research students. Paul Finch, founder of the charity, says, "It is only through research that we can improve the treatment of cancer, and hopefully one day, see the elimination of this disease. Few know that bowel cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide, and the second most common cause of cancer fatalities, leading to almost one million deaths per year. Our award is open to all postgraduate students whose research can impact bowel cancer outcomes."
<br>

<br>
The Red Trouser Day charity, founded in 2017, is run solely by volunteers. Many of these fundraisers have had their lives affected by bowel cancer. Paul speaks on behalf of all the volunteers, "We know that an exceptional student is out there in one of the UK's excellent universities. Only by going public with this search, will this substantial bursary help a well-deserving student with their research into bowel cancer."
<br>

Everyone involved with the Red Trouser Day charity is aware that finding funding for postgraduate research is becoming increasingly difficult. Nationwide cutbacks affect everyone, including students; this is why they have prioritised this award. 95% of all the Red Trouser Day funds raised,(excluding event costs), goes to sponsor research and awareness. Paul stresses that funding is one of the most common difficulties facing postgraduate students, "Just one student, free from financial constraints, could have a major effect on fighting cancer. That talented person, with the freedom to fully focus on developing new solutions, could potentially lead to new insights."

Last year's Red Trouser Day award allowed an exceptional research student from City, the University of London, to focus solely on her work. She had been holding down two part-time jobs just to pay for her living expenses, until the Red Trouser Day charity stepped in with a bursary.
<br>

<br>
The year’s award will go to a student whose research work shows promise in furthering the understanding of bowel cancer and contributes to preventing, improving the early detection of, or improving the treatment of colorectal cancer, aligning with the charity’s goals.
<br>

<br>
So we encourage everyone to get the word out there, that the search is now on! 
<br>

<br>
In addition, there are two further discretionary awards available to help students. There is a travel award of £500, for undergraduate and postgraduate students researching cancer worldwide. This bursary can be used to fund travel to conferences, seminars, or for visits to the UK to further bowel cancer research. A final award of up to £1,000 will be available for funding research consumables. 
<br>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[This week saw the largest list of Graduates ever from any single garden design college compete at the world-famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023. <a href='https://www.lcgd.org.uk/' rel='nofollow' target='_blank'>London College of Garden Design (LCGD)</a> Graduates and Students have competed in every garden category and enjoyed great success with some winning the top accolade of a Gold medal.

LCGD Director Andrew Wilson, who himself is exhibiting again at Chelsea this year, said “It’s a testament to the hard work of our tutors as well as our Graduates in being accepted to exhibit here. The show ground has also been full of our students helping on gardens and enjoying the experience of what exhibiting means.”

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[A new commentary on research explores the strong link between neurodivergent (here identified as Autistic, ADHD, Dyspraxic/DCD and Tourette’s syndromes) children and young people (CYP) with joint hypermobility and pain as a co-occurring physical health challenge. The topical review emphasises that physical challenges frequently get overlooked compared to the mental, emotional, and sensory issues faced by neurodivergent CYP. This makes neurodivergent CYP vulnerable to unnecessary suffering and important diagnoses being delayed or missed.

Lack of diagnoses and absence of the required medical help for CYP is resulting in ongoing physical health problems including but not limited to – joint pain, gastrointestinal/stomach pains, dizziness, bowel bladder issues, heart palpitations, anxiety, and extreme fatigue and tiredness. The study co-authored by Bethany Donaghy, Dr. David Moore, and Jane Green MBE, highlights three key challenges for the children and young people in schools:

--- Symptom disbelief and lack of understanding: is a common issue as medical practitioners are not trained to trace the symptoms or conditions within neurodivergent populations. As a result, children and adults are often disbelieved and this leads to further delays in diagnosis or support in education and care.  This can lead to lifelong trauma for neurodivergent CYP.
<br>

--- Communication issues: including differences in interoception, meaning one’s inner sense, can be varied among neurodivergent CYP, and typically, it requires a lot of staff training to spot the symptoms of health conditions.  This means the people are often misunderstood, have no other choice but to learn to ‘mask’ their pain, and do not receive help or support for these physical health problems that occur with neurodivergence more than the general neurotypical population.

--- Educational impacts: abound for neurodivergent CYP because of continuing physical health challenges due to which they end up having poorer attendance and attainment in mainstream schools as well as poorer social life with their friends/peers. This affects their mental health and wellbeing as well. Due to the mistrust or misdiagnosis in their symptoms, CYP often struggle to even get a sick note for the school from their medical practitioner due to symptomatic hypermobility being relatively unknown by medical practitioners. 
<br>

The authors recommend that “all” voices of CYP should be taken into consideration for all decisions made by educational institutions and health professionals. Increasing support for attendance and attainment, updating the school environment to help manage and understand pain, providing symptomatic hypermobility training to staff, upgrading diagnostic and treatment pathways through dual-screening for hypermobility with neurodivergence, building trust with pupils, enabling support for parents/carers and looking into the need for further funded research, are some of the ways to improve the situation.

Bethany Donaghy, the author of the research paper, explains, “Within my wider research, I speak to neurodivergent children and parents regularly and unfortunately the concerns we present here are far too common. It is unfair that the neurodivergent population continue to experience such negative outcomes with their physical health experiences. We must do more as a society to address this inequality and support neurodivergent CYP now rather than continuing to do so later."

Dr. David Moore, the author of the research paper, adds, “The lack of knowledge about pain in neurodivergent populations is concerning as pain may be the first or only sign of illness or injury, and these individuals may be both at greater risk of injury as well as requiring complex care for ongoing pain. It is clear that more work is needed prevent unnecessary suffering.”

Jane Green MBE, the author of the research paper, comments, “Having gone through the personal experience of not being believed for 54 years of my life, I myself present an acute observation to the challenge of symptom-disbelief faced by our society. I didn't mask being neurodivergent, but I learnt to mask the pain associated to being symptomatic hypermobile. The paper validates that younger generation, in addition to the older generation, continue to be mistrusted about their dual condition of hypermobility and neurodivergence. Comprehensive staff training and screening for people who work in education, health and care will help us provide the opportunity, especially to the CYP, to have much healthier and fulfilled life in education, employment and social mobility.”

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[Hive Mind Mead & Brew Co. has launched a new range of naturally-flavoured sparkling mead in cans.

The new Hive Mind Sparkling Mead range is 4% ABV and comes in four flavours - ginger, elderflower, rhubarb and pure honey. For the first time, it will be available in 330ml cans, sold individually or as a boxed four-pack containing one of each flavour. Two more flavours, sour cherry and honey & hops will also soon be added to the range. 
<br>

All of the company’s mead is gluten free, made with natural ingredients and uses British honey, including honey from its own hives in the Wye Valley, where its beekeeping supports local biodiversity, habitat conservation and important pollinator populations.
<br>

<br>
Showcasing their beekeeping heritage, the sparkling mead cans carry new Hive Mind branding, based around colourful honeycomb illustrations, and highlight the approximately 300,000 flowers visited and 50,000 miles flown by bees to make the honey for every can. The Sparkling Mead is launching on 20 May to coincide with World Bee Day - an international day of awareness in support of these vital pollinators.

The meadery was launched in 2018 as the Wye Valley Meadery by beekeeping brothers Kit and Matt Newell, and has recently rebranded as the Hive Mind Mead & Brew Co. The brothers have been pioneers in a UK resurgence in mead-making, taking one of the world’s oldest alcoholic drinks and creating new modern styles from session-strength light and refreshing sparkling meads through to stronger, more traditional wine-style and barrel-aged meads.

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[NAKMAS (National Association of Karate and Martial Art Schools), a national governing body, has announced the appointment of a new national management committee officer, further strengthening the organisation's governance, leadership, and management team.
<br>

Kelly McFie has been elected to the role of national management committee officer, effective immediately. In her new role, Kelly will be responsible for supporting the Chairman and wider national committee team in delivering NAKMAS' strategic vision and ensuring the highest level of governance, compliance, and risk control.
<br>

<br>
With more than 33 years of experience in the martial arts industry as a senior kickboxer and a passion for the sport, Kelly is well-placed to contribute to NAKMAS' ongoing success.
<br>

<br>
"I am thrilled to have been appointed as committee officer for NAKMAS," said Kelly. "I look forward to working with the Chairman and the NAKMAS National Management Committee to further strengthen NAKMAS' position as a leading authority as an independent national governing body within the martial arts world."
<br>

The appointment of Kelly McFie comes at an exciting time for NAKMAS. With a strong strategic focus on growth, development, and excellent governance overseen by the British Standards Institution(BSI), the organisation continues to work closely with its members and external partners to ensure the highest standards of training, coaching, and effective governance for martial arts practitioners across the United Kingdom.

"We are delighted to welcome Kelly to the national committee team," said The Reverend Joe Ellis, the National Chairman of NAKMAS and an 8th Dan within Karate. "Her expertise and passion for martial arts will be invaluable as we move forward with our ambitious growth and governance plans. She runs her own kickboxing club as a senior black belt (4th Dan) and has an impressive list of qualifications, including a BSc (Hons) First Class in Physical Activity and Health. She is also a competitive weightlifter and was the British Masters Champion in 2019. I am very proud to have Kelly on the committee, and I know she will make excellent contributions to NAKMAS as a whole".

ASA Foundations mission is to Support, Transform and Save the Lives of those affected by Autoimmune Disease.
<br>

<br>
In the UK, 7%, or 4 million people, are known to live with at least one autoimmune condition. There are nearly 100 identified autoimmune diseases, with incidence rising 9% each year. This is predicted to be significantly higher now that we are aware of Long-COVID. As a group they are a bigger killer than cancer and include conditions such as MS, Alzheimer’s, lupus, scleroderma, endometriosis, asthma, autism, Parkinson’s, Crohn’s, eczema, psoriasis and many more. Even cancer is related as it is an autoimmune dysfunction. 
<br>

Autoimmune Support & Awareness Foundation UK (ASA Foundation) is a registered UK charity. It was established by Asal Shirazi BEM in late 2022, after many years of her personal advocacy and as a direct response to the lack of information available for sufferers combined with the limited training provided to the primary care sector. 
<br>

<br>
Asal has a life limiting condition called Diffuse Systemic Scleroderma, Sjogren’s, Raynaud’s, Hashimoto’s, lupus plus many more, all autoimmune conditions. She was initially misdiagnosed which has led to more internal damage, affecting her physical and mental health. There are millions like her who have been mis or late diagnosed and thus a bigger burden on the NHS due to late treatment and unnecessary cost. 
<br>

According to Asal, “It’s all down to awareness and education. We need everyone to be able to spot the signs and be able to access the right kind of tests quickly”. In many ways COVID has helped people be more aware of their bodies, they now need to recognise that there are many more autoimmune conditions which can be equally as dangerous if undetected.
<br>

<br>
What is clear is that the emotional and mental impact on an individual can be life-changing and debilitating; depression, anxiety, and loneliness are common side-effects of a diagnosis. It is predicted that 66% of people living with autoimmune diseases have mental health problems and 68% of people with autoimmune diseases are unemployed or unable to work full-time. 
<br>

The NHS is under ever increasing pressure with waiting lists only set to get longer. But the alternative doesn’t need to be expensive private healthcare, there is another way. In response to this ASA Foundation UK has recently partnered with Living Room Health. “Speed to Diagnosis is key if we are to deal with growing number of people affected by Autoimmune Disease. We are delighted to be able to partner with Living Room Health to be able to make this happen” says Prof Ash Professor Ash Mosahebi, Consultant Plastic Surgeon – MBBS FRCS FRCS(PLAST) PHD MBA. Professor Mosahebi is the head of one of the largest plastic surgery teaching units at a leading London hospital. He carries out reconstructive surgery for the after effects of cancer and deals with patients deformed by the effects of autoimmune disease every day. Living Room Health is making private healthcare more accessible to take the burden off the NHS. They offer a self-pay solution for diagnosis and treatment and have created an immediate, straightforward, and cost-effective approach to healthcare, providing same day appointments and a range of services and treatments from MRIs to joint pain management to GP services.

UK workers are finding British offices and places of work to be lacking, as the latest research has branded them as uninspiring and uninviting, with many blaming the pandemic for the shift in work attitudes. 
<br>
 
<br>
A new report by interior design and fit-out business Claremont has revealed how businesses can make workplaces relevant and compelling by tuning into how employees feel about an office. 
<br>
 
<br>
Claremont surveyed more than 1,000 office workers across a range of sectors to identify the impact of an office on a workforce’s behaviour and how staff need to feel in order to be happy, healthy and productive.  
<br>
 
<br>
Dubbed ‘The Workplace Oooh’, the research revealed that almost half of employees – 52% of hybrid workers and 48% of full-time office-based workers – feel uninspired by their workplace, while 42% say their office doesn’t make them feel valued. 
<br>
 
<br>
It also revealed that the vast majority of today’s employees (84%) expect the office to deliver an experience, rather than it just being a place to complete tasks.   
<br>
 
<br>
Sarah Syson, Head of Design at Claremont said: “In recent years, the very essence of how, when and where we work has changed and the office has taken on a new role. It’s no longer the everyday place for work and so it must work much harder to make itself relevant and inviting.  Now, the office needs to give employees the feelings and experiences that lone working leaves us wanting – those rich in face-to-face contact, collaboration and socialisation.”

The research also revealed the six key emotions that today’s employees seek from their workplace – they want to feel inspired, valued, connected, supported, included and proud. 
<br>
 
<br>
Camaraderie and a feeling of connection with colleagues is key – over a third (35%) of all employees and 42% of hybrid employees said they want to visit the office to feel human connection and teamwork is what makes people feel the most productive and positive about being in the office. 
<br>
 
<br>
Cost of living has also had an impact on attitudes to places of work, with 28% of people sharing that a major reason they would visit the office is to be in a heated space. For the youngest workers, this rose to 31% of Generation Z. 
<br>
 
<br>
Equally, workers revealed red flags that can put them off attending the office including poor kitchen facilities, poor & outdated office etiquette, lack of quiet spaces, no wellbeing spaces, concerns about cleanliness, no access to the outdoors and even bad coffee. 
<br>

The data also revealed that:

<br>
- Nearly a third of employees want a fun creative environment (30%), closely followed by using brilliant technology (29%) 
<br>
- Seeing friends and working as part of a team is also essential for modern workers, with almost a third saying it makes them feel positive about work (32%) and the same saying it makes them feel productive (31%) 
<br>
-Collaboration is also highly valued but mostly by the Baby Boomer generation with 40% saying they want face-to-face collaboration opportunities.  
<br>
- Almost a quarter (24%) of this audience also wanted better technology in the workplace to help them collaborate with colleagues 
<br>

Generational differences are highlighted too, with stark attitude shifts from Baby Boomers through to Generation X, Millennials and Generation Z. The youngest group of workers, 
<br>

<br>
Generation Z, are the proudest of their workspaces at 84%, but they do have high expectations of it with a fifth (20%) expecting it to be environmentally conscious 
<br>

Inclusion mattered to all workers, covering a range of needs including flexible working. Flexible working was highlighted as an important factor for female employees (45% compared with 37% of men) and was prevalent most for Millennials and Generation X.

Sarah continued: “The research really highlights that a workplace needs to suit employees’ evolving demands – which means catering for their emotional needs and helping them to feel happy, healthy and more productive – as well as meeting their more practical task-based needs with systems and technology.   
<br>

“With factors including flexible working, cost of living and eco-conscious workspaces being highlighted as important to workers, it’s more important now than ever before for a workplace to meet workers’ needs at every level. 
<br>
 
<br>
“The research also highlighted that far too many workplaces aren’t up to the job and they definitely don’t have ‘The Workplace Oooh’, which could well lead to high staff turnover or recruitment struggles down the line.”

God Save the Future Queen & King of Pop:

In 2011, British artist Zoobs Ansari created two mixed media art works titled 'God Save the Future Queen' and 'King of Pop', featuring Prince William and Kate Middleton, now the Prince and Princess of Wales. Measuring 48 inches x 36 inches, these works were created on wood, combining digital imagery, lettering-montage, and Zoobs' signature paint work. They were part of a series of works he called 'scrolls', which he started creating on wood after initially using heavyweight art paper. The works were framed in Victorian frames adding 12 inches to their size, and were unveiled at a gallery in London, generating global media coverage and eventually being acquired by Dolce & Gabbana. Limited edition prints were also released and sold out within a week. Inspired by the 'Sex Pistols' vinyl record artwork, the works will now be released as interactive NFTs on the 12th wedding anniversary of the Prince and Princess of Wales, approximately 12 years after they were first created.
