As part of the group’s own comprehensive carbon reduction strategy, they have set out to become net zero by 2030 supported by achieving carbon neutrality this year. The business also manages its environmental performance following an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.

EDW’s carbon neutral status is underpinned by a plan to reduce its emissions along a 1.5°C trajectory, based on best practice energy management for the business type and energy efficiency and technology projects. Initiatives include removing barriers for employees to reduce their own emissions associated with commuting and homeworking, a large part of the company’s Scope 3 emissions.

To help mitigate the impact of their business emissions as they work towards their 2030 goal, the company decided to invest in verified carbon offsetting schemes sourced from the voluntary carbon market.

The projects were selected from the Gold Standard Voluntary Emissions Reductions (VER) programme to ensure the carbon credits are independently verified and stand up to scrutiny.

The aim was to offset 100% of the carbon emissions associated with the group’s operations. The chosen projects align with the businesses’ values to support energy efficiency and sustainable tech innovation and include a domestic energy efficiency project in Rwanda, a wind power project in Rajasthan, a biomass power project in Chhattisgarh, India, and an energy and biodiversity restoration project in Honduras. Collectively EDW’s investment into these projects has helped save 333 tonnes of CO2 emissions from being released into the atmosphere, equivalent to the groups carbon emissions over the previous financial year.

1. Don’t wait! Start your carbon offsetting journey sooner rather than later.

There are a few reasons why you shouldn't delay starting your journey to becoming carbon neutral. As pressure from consumers and stakeholders continues to mount on businesses, it is more important than ever that organisations start to explore how to reduce their carbon emissions and their impact on the planet.

You may also want to begin your carbon offsetting journey now as carbon credit prices are expected to rise due to an increase in demand over the next few years; avoid paying large amounts for offsetting your carbon by taking those vital first steps.

Starting this journey sooner rather than later means that you can fulfil your customer’s requirements by improving your environmental credentials, elevate your reputation and become a leader in sustainability.

The first step in your journey to carbon neutrality is to understand your organisation’s current carbon emissions. This can take time and resources to analyse, with organisations needing to calculate and report on their scopes 1, 2 and 3 emissions. Through understanding these emissions, businesses can see what they can reduce as part of their net zero strategy and which emissions are unavoidable and should be offset by investing in carbon offsetting projects.

With projects that help businesses offset their emissions becoming increasingly popular, we recommend starting your journey as soon as possible.

2. How to choose the right offsetting scheme for your business

With so many different offsetting schemes out there, it can be overwhelming when trying to find one that aligns with your organisation’s values and what you are looking to achieve.

Due to its current lack of regulation, the Voluntary Carbon Market is often referred to as the ‘wild west’; to avoid choosing the wrong project, make sure you do your research.

Learning as much as possible about the projects you are interested in can help you understand how your carbon credits will be used. By ensuring the scheme is validated to the highest accreditation will mean you are investing in a verified project and will ensure your business does not get accused of greenwashing.

These verifications include:
• Verified Carbon Standard (VCS)
• Gold Standard Voluntary Emission Reductions (VER)
• UK and EU Emissions Trading Standard (EU + UK ETS)
• United Nations Certified Emission Reductions (CER) programmes.

3. Get your carbon neutral status verified

If you want to ensure that your carbon neutral strategy and targets are of the highest standard, then we recommend getting your strategy verified.

By verifying that your carbon reduction strategy and carbon offsetting investments are in line with the latest climate sciences, you are demonstrating that you are serious about being carbon neutral, that you are on track to reduce your emissions, and avoid greenwashing accusations.

Although there are different routes, we recommend doing this through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which will verify your plan and target for reducing your greenhouse emissions, as long as they are in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement of limiting the Earth’s warming to 1.5C.

By getting this stamp of approval from the SBTi, you can future proof your organisation’s growth, save money, gain resilience against regulation and boost confidence for customers, employees and stakeholders.

4. So now that you are carbon neutral, what’s next?

Now that your organisation has offset its residual carbon emissions, you can celebrate becoming carbon neutral.

While this is a great achievement, there is still more work to do. Becoming carbon neutral typically means that you will not increase your carbon emissions, so focusing on how you can keep your emissions down will play a key role in this journey.

If you already have a net zero strategy in place, then take this opportunity to begin implementing those projects in your plan, and reducing your carbon emissions completely. However, if you have become carbon neutral but aren’t sure what the next steps are, now is the perfect time to start setting your net zero targets and plan out your strategy for reaching them.

It is important to remember that although becoming a carbon neutral business is a great step in the right direction, it does not mean you do not have any CO2 emissions.

Now that you are carbon neutral, it is time to use that as a solid foundation to start defining, shaping and creating a carbon reduction strategy. By working with a net zero consultancy, you can secure a plan to support you in meeting your next milestone: becoming a net zero organisation.

The report, Cracking the Growth Code: Traits and Strategies of High-Growth Firms in Europe, is a collaborative European Scaleup Monitor, and was launched at the Institute’s inaugural conference at Nova Business School, Portugal. The conference welcomes academics and practitioners across Europe to engage in discussions to strengthen and build a knowledge community around scaling up.

The European Scaleup Institute is a collaboration between leading academic experts in Europe including: Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship & Rotterdam School of Management (Erasmus University Rotterdam), Netherlands; ESADE Business School, Spain; ESSEC Business School, France; Luiss Business School, Italy; NOVA Business School, Portugal; University of Galway, Ireland; Vlerick Business School, Belgium; WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management, Germany.

The collaborative European Scaleup Monitor analyses the dynamic landscape of high-growth firms (HGFs) and reveals a multitude of growth paths across Europe. The monitor sheds light on the traits and strategies of HGFs across the European scaleup ecosystem, providing valuable insights for (scaleup) entrepreneurs, governmental organisations, knowledge institutions and policymakers to address the scaleup gap.

Only one in ten companies in Europe manages to scale on average by more than 10% annually, over a three-year period. When it comes to high growth (more than 20% annual growth), this shrinks to one out of twenty-four. Consistent scaling is even more difficult to achieve: only 1.13% of all European companies are able to scale by more than 20% for two years out of the three-year period.

The European Scaleup Monitor also identifies some interesting trends regarding high growth in Europe:

Younger HGFs tend to achieve higher (consistent) average annual growth rates: they are, on average, 20% faster than their mature counterparts.
The higher the growth rate, the larger the firm size: firms with more than 50 employees experience more than twice the growth rate of their smaller counterparts.

Although HGFs are well spread across different industries, ICT and service-based industries remain in the lead.
Only 10% of Hypergrowers (40% consistent growth)are funded and tend to receive a surge of late-stage funding in the third year of the hypergrowth, implying hypergrowth to be a catalyst for funding.

Three out of the top five countries (in terms of HGF concentration) are from the Nordics, while Helsinki is a major hotspot for both high- and hypergrowth, together with Dublin and Munich.

Blockchain and distributed ledger technologies (DLT) are emerging as a fundamental building block of new digital communications platforms. The patent on Data Structure Storage Optimisation, invented by Jon Geater and Mansoor Ahmed-Rengers, enables more flexible storage of the chain data in parts without losing the end-to-end cryptographic verifiability of the chain. This addresses fears and costs of maintaining ever-growing data.

Recent exeme temperatures in the region demonstrate the ongoing climate and nature crisis in Southeast Asia. The report is published at a time of both ecological and economic uncertainty for the region, as climate change continues to impact disproportionately Asian economies – many of which are underpinned by nature.

Researchers at Imperial’s Centre for Climate Finance & Investment (CCFI) have identified a number of financial instruments available to support the funding of much-needed nature restoration projects in the region – notably including SLBs.

The report, which is authored by Dr Pernille Holtedahl, a Research Fellow at the CCFI, and supported by the Singapore Green Finance Centre (SGFC), explores among other things the use of SLBs in funding restoration projects in Malaysia. The annual cost of nature restoration across Southeast Asiacould total $200 billion, demanding greater private sector involvement and, as such, these capital market instruments are one way to entice fixed income investors to support the Malaysian government’s biodiversity ambitions.

SLBs, of which some US$73 billion were issued globally in 2022, tie organisations to certain sustainability commitments via penalties that are incurred for targets missed. The researchers propose the use of credible and verifiable key performance indicators (KPIs) in administering these SLBs.

Alongside biodiversity-linked SLBs, the paper, Nature Investment as a Response to the Climate Crisis: Opportunities in Southeast Asia, stresses that a broad range of financial instruments are available for use and offer viable avenues for generating private sector investment in the region as it looks to fund crucial nature action projects.

As nature investments offer both a logical and powerful response to the climate and nature emergency in Southeast Asia, the report stresses the breadth of choice available via financial and nature market instruments.

The report also highlights a collection of mangrove restoration projects which offer asset owners, insurance companies and impact investors cost savings or financial returns. It notes, however, that while these projects represent a potentially powerful nature investment opportunity in Southeast Asia, scalable business models remain in their infancy.

Finally, Dr Holtedahl advises against overreliance on carbon credits to provide the investment case for nature, instead encouraging long-term incorporation of nature benefits into broader corporate investment decisions.

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands, May 24, 2023 – Brivo, a leading provider of cloud-based access control and smart building technologies, today announces it has implemented infrastructure hosted in Germany to support European customers.

Based in the greater Frankfurt area of Germany, the EU instance will support European businesses using its cloud-based access control platform, Brivo Access. The data centre enables Brivo to speed up its European expansion by meeting data residency and privacy requirements of customers in the region.
