Well structured capital market instruments – including sustainability-linked bonds (SLBs) - can play a role in scaling up investments in nature restoration projects in Southeast Asia, a new report from Imperial College Business School finds.

Recent exeme temperatures in the region demonstrate the ongoing climate and nature crisis in Southeast Asia. The report is published at a time of both ecological and economic uncertainty for the region, as climate change continues to impact disproportionately Asian economies – many of which are underpinned by nature.

Researchers at Imperial’s Centre for Climate Finance & Investment (CCFI) have identified a number of financial instruments available to support the funding of much-needed nature restoration projects in the region – notably including SLBs.

The report, which is authored by Dr Pernille Holtedahl, a Research Fellow at the CCFI, and supported by the Singapore Green Finance Centre (SGFC), explores among other things the use of SLBs in funding restoration projects in Malaysia. The annual cost of nature restoration across Southeast Asiacould total $200 billion, demanding greater private sector involvement and, as such, these capital market instruments are one way to entice fixed income investors to support the Malaysian government’s biodiversity ambitions.

SLBs, of which some US$73 billion were issued globally in 2022, tie organisations to certain sustainability commitments via penalties that are incurred for targets missed. The researchers propose the use of credible and verifiable key performance indicators (KPIs) in administering these SLBs.

Alongside biodiversity-linked SLBs, the paper, Nature Investment as a Response to the Climate Crisis: Opportunities in Southeast Asia, stresses that a broad range of financial instruments are available for use and offer viable avenues for generating private sector investment in the region as it looks to fund crucial nature action projects.

As nature investments offer both a logical and powerful response to the climate and nature emergency in Southeast Asia, the report stresses the breadth of choice available via financial and nature market instruments.

The report also highlights a collection of mangrove restoration projects which offer asset owners, insurance companies and impact investors cost savings or financial returns. It notes, however, that while these projects represent a potentially powerful nature investment opportunity in Southeast Asia, scalable business models remain in their infancy.

Finally, Dr Holtedahl advises against overreliance on carbon credits to provide the investment case for nature, instead encouraging long-term incorporation of nature benefits into broader corporate investment decisions.

Reflecting on the findings of the report, Dr Holtedahl, says:

“The opportunities available to encourage private investors to consider nature investments when making financial decisions are manifold. Climate change is already impacting Southeast Asian economies and together with the risk of ecosystem collapse provide a strong motivation for investing in nature. This paper has framed the case for nature investing from both a public and private perspective. We have highlighted that investors stand to benefit greatly from nature investments – whether it be for resilience, portfolio diversification, or cost reduction efforts. We hope that this report offers some insight into the potential entry points for investors in the region

In celebration of the forthcoming Coronation Day on May 6th, two dog-friendly Shropshire businesses have come together to help Tayto the King Charles Spaniel enjoy a visit fit for a king at an exquisite 16th century Hall in South Shropshire.

Marrington Escapes holiday house rentals and Different Dog, Shrewsbury’s freshly cooked dog food specialists, joined forces at the beautiful Marrington Hall in Chirbury where Tayto was giving the 16th century stately house a once-over prior to guests arriving for the weekend celebrations.

Tayto, who is a key member of the Product Development team at Different Dog, approved of the extensive grounds and gardens with swimming pool which provided a perfect backdrop for the elegantly refurbished Hall. As usual, Tayto enjoyed his lunch-time serving of Different Dog’s hand-cooked dog food in the baronial dining room and afterwards retired to the drawing room for a nap.

Chris Morris from Marrington Escapes said: “What a treat to host our very own King Charles at Marrington Hall. As a dog-friendly Estate, we know that luxury doesn’t have to mean you leave your furry friends behind when booking a getaway to Shropshire. Tayto certainly seemed to approve of the standard here at the Hall and we are looking forward to hosting families and friends who are booking the Hall for their own celebrations fit for royalty ahead.”

Becca Murphy, Product Technical Lead from Different Dog commented: “Tayto and I have thoroughly enjoyed our time here at Marrington. It is great to be working together with another dog-friendly Shropshire family business for the upcoming Coronation, and treating our very own King Charles as royalty.”

When not hosting ‘royal’ guests, the spectacular late 16th century Marrington Hall sleeps up to 14 with impressive space to entertain and celebrate. With its elegant drawing room, glamorous dining room and comfy lounges, this listed country house is part of a portfolio of luxuriously appointed properties available on the Marrington Estate, located in Chirbury, South Shropshire.

Marrington Escapes is part of the Morris & Company Group, a fifth-generation family business based in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
PCE Automation of Beccles, Suffolk, wins the inaugural King’s Award for Enterprise 2023
Manufacturer is honoured with the UK’s most prestigious commercial award for innovation

Beccles, Suffolk, 21 April 2023. PCE Automation Ltd today announced that the company has been awarded the King’s Award for Enterprise, in recognition of its excellence in innovation.

PCE Automation Ltd specialises in bespoke automation, repeat automation, and value-added services, including pre-automation and aftercare services to address the varying needs of customers across a range of industry sectors including ocular, medical and pharmaceutical. Its product handling, assembling, and testing systems have a global reputation for innovation and quality. Founded in 1961 by Ernest James Cook, the company was previously awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2020 for international trade putting it in a select group of companies who have won both the Queen’s and King’s Awards for Enterprise. PCE is a trusted partner to many blue-chip, industry-leading life science organisations around the world.

The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon Rishi Sunak MP, recommended that the company should receive one of the inaugural King’s Awards for Enterprise, in recognition of a key innovative project in the ocular sector - which it delivered for a major global manufacturer of contact lenses. The project enabled the manufacturer of ‘made to order’ on demand (MTO) silicone hydro lenses to reduce its lead times to the end-user and greatly enhance the efficiency, flexibility and scalability of the manufacturing process. In doing so, the company has uncovered major commercial opportunities and an increase in market share. Not only was the manufacturing time cut, but the productivity output was increased by circa 360%.

CEO, James Cook commented “The King’s Award for Enterprise is the most prestigious British business award because of its provenance as the Queen’s Award. To be recognised for our contribution to innovation reflects the huge team effort made by each member of our staff to develop a range of world-leading solutions with innovation incorporated across the board - in design, project management, engineering and software programming.”

Employing 99 staff at its Beccles headquarters and 22 at its Lutterworth site, PCE is focused on staff empowerment, achievements and well-being and has exciting expansion plans to develop its site, recruit more staff and expand its presence within Europe. In 2022 PCE announced an ongoing acquisition of an Irish organisation, which will see it become a multinational corporation, helping to expand its geographical presence and diversification into numerous automation growth sectors.

MP for Waveney, Peter Aldous MP, supported the application for the King’s Award for Enterprise and has taken an active interest in the company. He commented, “Congratulations to the team at PCE Automation on this prestigious accolade. With a focus on empowering employees, PCE is a business of which East Anglia and Suffolk can be proud”.

In its inaugural year, the King’s Award for Enterprise follows 57 years of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, where previous winners included J.P Morgan, iCandy, Veolia and Willmott Dixon.

The next celebratory steps for PCE include a listing in a special edition of the London Gazette, published in April, which will carry the names of all of the winners. The London Gazette is the oldest English newspaper and is an official journal of record of the British Government. A Grant of Appointment ceremony will take place at PCE’s office (date tba) with the county’s Lord Lieutenant and local VIPs. The Lord Lieutenant is His Majesty The King’s local representative and will personally present a crystal trophy to the PCE team. In addition, CEO, James Cook will visit Buckingham Palace in the summer for a celebratory reception, which is hosted by His Majesty King Charles III.

Leading natural pet supplement manufacturer Lintbells has been honoured with the first ever King’s Award for Enterprise for its work in international trade.

It is the third time the company has received such a prestigious royal accolade, having previously earned The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Innovation in 2016 and The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Innovation: International Trade in 2018.

The new King’s Award for Enterprise reflects the continued growth of Lintbells and expansion in international markets and significant launch into the US.

Following the risks from Brexit , Lintbells made a strategic choice to expand internationally, most notably increasing its presence in the US Market. Part of this expansion included launching new products, sales channels, and acquiring a new local HQ, as well as recruiting talent to the company. Lintbells also continued its expansion across other international markets with the introduction of skin, digestive and calming ranges, alongside its core joint supplement, YuMOVE.

Established in the UK and based in Weston, Hertfordshire, in 2006, Lintbells has seen rapid continued growth as part of their international expansion; quintupling their business outside of the UK over the past 5 years (2018-2022).

Lintbells now exports high-quality products for pets in more than 20 countries worldwide.

Fiona Hope, Lintbells CEO, said: “The whole team at Lintbells is delighted that our international growth has been recognised by such a prestigious award.

We are very proud of the difference that our scientific supplements make to the quality of life of companion animals and have worked hard to extend our global reach.

To receive the first Enterprise Award from His Majesty King Charles III, makes this is a very special moment in Lintbells’ history.”

Lintbells has always had one driving mission; to help pets across the world live their most active life, for life. The ethos of this mission is prevalent in all aspects of how the company approaches the business – from working with sustainable farms off the coast of New Zealand to source the very best ingredients - to its charitable work and partnerships that support pets across the UK and the US.
Note:

The King’s Awards for Enterprise was previously known as The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, and the new name reflects His Majesty The King’s desire to continue the legacy of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s by recognising outstanding UK businesses.

The Award programme, now in its 57th year, is the most prestigious business award in the country and is internationally recognised. The 2023 Awardees will be announced on Friday 21 April this year, marking Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday, and on 6 May from 2024, the anniversary of The King’s coronation.

About Lintbells

For Lintbells, every product starts with pets at the heart. Based in Weston in Hertfordshire, Lintbells researches, formulates and manufactures high-quality, innovative natural supplements that aim to improve the lives of dogs, cats and horses. It’s a commitment the company takes very seriously and has resulted in products that support skin and coat condition, digestive health, behaviour and joint care.

Established in 2006 by John Howie and John Davies, Lintbells has a strong focus on scientific validation of its products, working with experts such as the Royal Veterinary College and New Zealand’s Marlborough Research Centre. But it does not stop with the science because helping pets is at the core of the business.

At all levels of the Lintbells’ organisation there is a realisation that collectively, everyone has a responsibility to help keep pets healthy and happy by providing effective, high-quality pet supplements at affordable prices.

And it seems those efforts are increasingly appreciated by pets and their people. As the UK’s no.1 veterinary joint supplement brand* YuMOVE is already supporting more than 2 million dogs a year.**

EMBARGOED UNTIL 18/04/2023

LONDON, UK – Flybox, a UK-based agri-tech company, proudly announces the commencement of the world’s first end-to-end modular insect farm this March in Aylesbury, UK. This follows a successful funding round which increased Flybox financing to GBP 1.8m, including over GBP 1m in grants from Innovate UK and the European Union. Flybox’s groundbreaking modular technology will unlock the tremendous benefits of insect farming for the entire food supply chain, by directly deploying their tech solution where waste is produced, or feed is needed.

We are projected to be 60 Million Tonnes short of Protein by 2030. Demand for Animal Feed is expected to Double by 2050. Climate extremes, economic shocks and soaring food & fertiliser prices reap chaos for food producers around the globe.

The Flybox Grow®, their first market-ready insect farming unit, is an off the shelf modular solution that transforms organic waste into insect-protein for animal feed, and Frass for fertilizer. It unlocks circular waste management for food producers, retailers and farmers on a global scale. It provides a top quality source of feed and enrichment for farmers on their own land. The average large supermarket, farmer or food producer could take 20+ Flybox Grow containers per site, which could upcycle up to 6,500t of waste per year and save 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year per site—equivalent to the emissions of 1,200 people in the UK.

Flybox is now building a demonstrator of the world's first end-to-end modular insect-farm in Aylesbury, UK. Focussing on affordability and adaptability the modular insect farm will enable any player in the food industry to purchase Black Soldier Fly breeding, nursery, growing, waste management and product processing solutions separately or combined into a fully functioning and made-to-order, ready-to-go insect farm. Once ordered the farm is constructed locally and delivered to their chosen site(s). The animal feed (£450bn) and fertiliser (£250bn) market is a prime target for innovative solutions like Flybox.

“Flybox aims to ease access to insect-farming technology, moving away from the era of exclusively centralised insect-farming facilities”, says CEO Andrea Jagodic. “Now is the time for the industry to open up and offer solutions directly to waste producers and food producers—including the developing world.”

While Europe has advanced waste usage systems like biogas production and composting, Sub-Saharan Africa lags behind, with Kenya alone generating 14,000 tonnes of consumer food waste daily. With Flybox, governments in developing countries can finally modernise high-priority food waste policies whilst simultaneously reaping environmental, social and economic rewards.

‘As many as 828 million people are unsure of where their next meal is coming from. We have a choice: act now to save lives and invest in solutions that secure food security stability and peace for all, or see people around the world facing rising hunger.’ - The World Food Programme

Flybox’s big unlock comes off the back of a hyper successful run of projects in Kenya and the UK in partnership with local companies, NGOs and government. By unlocking insect-tech solutions for food producers, retailers and farmers everywhere, Flybox is poised to play a significant role in accelerating the global transition to circular agriculture.

There have been a number of headlines about the one per cent leaving millions to their surviving pets. This got us thinking about the millions of dogs that will be vulnerable if their owners pass away without making a plan for them.

1 in 5 dog owners have already listed a caretaker for their dog in their will and also left money to help caretakers keep their cherished pets happy and healthy.

Some pet owners are leaving more than 40% of their wealth for their dogs’ care (5%). Data shows that, on average, Brits have around £17,365 in their savings. This means that around 650,000 potential pet parents could inherit upwards of £6,946.

However, 76% of dog owners are putting their dogs at risk by letting the law or a beneficiary decide what will happen to their furry friend. This means that many grieving families may be forced to take on the responsibility of looking after a new pet or, in some cases, have no choice but to give the dog to a shelter. Despite this, 20% of pet owners do not think it’s necessary to add their pet will, with some saying they ‘hope’ that they will outlive their pet. A quarter of dog owners say they simply have not had time to plan for their canine companion’s future.

Jack Cornes at Puppies.co.uk says: “Our research clearly shows that many Brits are not concerned enough about their dogs, leaving a large number of dogs unprotected if anything happens to their owners.”

Qarrar Somji at Witan Solicitors says that “pet owners usually ask whether it’s possible to leave money or property to their pets in a will. Whilst it is directly not possible to do so, you can leave your pet to a friend or member of your family, together with a gift to provide for their maintenance.”

But your dog’s new parent doesn’t have to be a friend or family member. Vera Rocha, a Will writing expert at Stanford Legal Services, says: “Interestingly, in the case of one of my clients, it was the dog walker.”
Methodology
The survey was sent to more than 26,000 buyers and breeders registered on our platform.

The survey involved 4 questions:
Have you included your dogs in your will?
What plans have you made for your dogs in your will?
Why haven't you included a plan for your dog in your will?
How much money do you plan to leave for your dog’s future care?

We determined how much potential caretakers could inherit by looking at the UK’s dog population and the average person’s savings.

SCUDI International BV announced today that its growing client base has necessitated the recruitment of distribution partners in the UK and Europe. Using SCUDI gives employees instant and anonymous access to their salary before payday.

SCUDI is a social impact FinTech and an Enterprise Software SaaS provider. The company, founded by Rie Sordo-De Cock, Group CEO (pictured), has successfully developed an innovative application solution which gives employees instant access to a portion of their earnt salary.

The application is already in use at several logistics companies in Germany. In the current economic downturn and cost of living crisis, it is fast becoming a popular solution for both employees and employers. The SCUDI mobile app gives access to salary funds between paydays at no cost to the employee (with no transaction or interest charges). It is secure, anonymous, easy to use and fast; the funds reach the employee’s account within minutes of the withdrawal transaction.

SCUDI helps employees with their financial well-being and gives peace of mind, with the freedom to do what they want with their wages; thus empowering the employee.

Employers with 1000+ employees utilising SCUDI, could reap the benefits of improved staff motivation and performance; resulting in lower absenteeism, better staff retention and even attraction of new employees, which is crucial in the current war on talent.

SCUDI helps strengthen a company’s social profile and corporate image. The social element of ESG (environmental, social and governance) becomes fully measurable and reportable. SCUDI is integrated with the payroll and thus completely automated for the internal administration and personnel department. SCUDI has an affordable pricing structure for the employer.

SCUDI International BV is now actively seeking distribution partners in the UK and Europe to service the growing number of new enquiries. The company is also open to investment opportunities to fund its expansion programme.

Regionally-focused environmental agreements are two and a half times more likely to be ratified than globally-focused environmental agreements, according to new research by Durham University Business School.

The researchers also found that environmental lobbying positively affects countries participation in environmental agreements, while the effect of industrial lobbying is statistically insignificant.

The study, conducted by Dr. Francesco Bellelli for his Ph.D. thesis in Economics at Durham University Business School, under the supervision of Professor Riccardo Scarpa and Associate Professor Ashar Aftab, explored the determinants of countries participation in environmental international agreements, with a special focus on lobbying and regional agreements.

The researchers assembled the most complete dataset to date comprising 263 multilateral environmental agreements and 198 countries between 1950 and 2017. From this, the researchers identified the potential ratifiers for each agreement.

The results revealed that regional treaties could be an effective tool for solving environmental issues because they can more easily engage small groups of countries in action. On the contrary, the negotiation of global agreements requires finding a compromise among many nations, which could end up penalising participation in the agreement or hindering its environmental effectiveness.

The researchers also found that the probability of ratification decreases over time, being at its highest during the first three years since the initial agreement and decreasing quickly after five years. Because of this, symbolic ratifications by big players are most effective in the early stages of the agreement, in helping to encourage progress/change.

“Whether it is air pollution, global warming, biodiversity loss or deforestation, most environment-related challenges cross national borders and simultaneously affect several nations – that is why international cooperation is required to solve some of the most severe environmental problems of our times.”, says Professor Scarpa.

“Our research clearly shows that regional agreements are more likely to tackle the challenges that the world faces, whereas global agreements risk alienating particular countries, and potentially limiting the targets pursued in the agreements, meaning key environmental challenges are less effectively tackled.”

The researchers believe these findings offer novel insights to policymakers on the most effective ways to expand countries' participation in tackling environmental challenges. Local, regional partnerships, though smaller, can generate greater commitment and overall success rate, in a shorter period of time.

The UK’s fastest-growing pet food brand, Webbox, has pledged to support pets impacted by the crisis in Ukraine with thousands of meals. They will be working with heroic charity, Breaking the Chains, who continue to operate in Ukraine’s most dangerous areas – areas that no other organisation can get to – to rescue animals, deliver supplies and ensure that those left behind are not forgotten.

With a pet population of over 7 million cats and 5 million dogs in Ukraine, there is a real need for support in terms of food, and equipment for those pets that have been left behind when their owners have either sadly been killed or had to flee their homes. The UK pet industry has come together to pledge food and financial aid since the war began but this crisis is not going away.

Webbox CEO, Tony Raeburn, commented:
“At this year’s People’s Pet Awards, we were lucky enough to meet Tom, a brave soldier who risked his life to rescue pets from the Ukraine battlefield. We reached out to Tom to see how we could support his charity, Breaking the Chains, where he explained that they were in desperate need of pet food.

As a company extremely passionate about pets, we jumped at the chance to help! Our truck of food has now arrived in Ukraine with much-needed supplies to enable Tom and his team to provide support to pets fleeing the Ukraine conflict.”
Romance was on the menu for 19-year old Rothschild’s giraffe Casper and potential love interests Kimmy and Freya, as they shared a special moment over some delicious roses, butternut squash and sweet potato heart-shaped treats.

Jenny Fisher, Senior Keeper, says: “Casper has been incredibly successful in the past when it comes to the ladies, and we’re hoping that it’s something that we might be able to repeat again this year with Kimmy and Freya! It’s a case of wait and see for the next few months, but we’re hopeful and trying everything we can to help the breeding programme along.”
Whilst the giraffes enjoyed their tasty treats, Mirijam, Mkuzi and Bonnie - the female Southern white rhinos – dove straight in to the besties boxes that keepers had lovingly wrapped for them. Their “galentine’s” set up was offered as part of the physical enrichment activities, designed to keep their minds and bodies active.

Mirijam and Mkuzi have been fan favourites at Woburn for over a decade, but the trio have lived together happily in the reserves at the Park since Bonnie moved in during May 2021.

Jenny said: “Like any girl gang our rhinos are really close, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t the occasional squabble – especially when youngster Bonnie is being particularly boisterous! But they are the best of friends and any bickering is all forgotten very quickly.

Creating pieces of enrichment for the rhinos is always a bit of a challenge as they’re so large and everything has to be on a much bigger scale, so it’s great to see them showing their love for each other with this galentine’s build - and working together on it’s total destruction!”

Keepers also prepared some primate playdates in the Land of Lemurs and African Jungle so the lemur troop and Barbary macaques could join in the fun, with a buffet feast including different fruits and vegetables like beetroot, squash and leafy greens, all up for grabs in individual treat bags and boxes.

1.	Opened in 1970 by the 13th Duke of Bedford, Woburn Safari Park is one of the UK’s oldest wild animal parks and has hundreds of species of endangered, exotic and native animals roaming in more than 300 acres of beautiful parkland.

2.	The Park has a history of species conservation, dating back more than 100 years and is a member of, and contributor to, the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).

3.	Woburn Safari Park is a European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) accredited zoo, and participates in the captive management of endangered breeding animals through the EAZA Ex-Situ Programme (EEP). These help to ensure a viable and sustainable captive population of key species is maintained long term. Each programme plays a key role in the conservation of notable and endangered species. The co-ordinator and committee also make recommendations on animal moves between zoos.

4.	Park attractions include a Road Safari home to species such as Southern White Rhinos, a large herd of Rothschild’s giraffes, monkeys, Amur tigers, African lions, North American black bears and a herd of five Asian elephants. At the Foot Safari guests can get out of their vehicles and get up close with Humboldt penguins, red pandas, slender-tailed meerkats, lemurs and more with a variety of walk-through enclosures and a popular programme of talks and demonstrations.

5.	The park is open daily from the 9th February.

The new UN study that reported on Monday, prior to the start of the critically important COP15 meeting in Montreal, that biodiversity credits can help boost conservation financing across the world, is a move that ecologist and founder of Environment Bank Professor David Hill, CBE says is ‘significant’.

“Here in the UK we have lost 60% of our biodiversity over the past six decades,” he said.

“Since biodiversity loss represents an existential threat to us equivalent to that of climate change, and since 55% of global GDP relies on what nature provides, there is no doubt in my mind that we need a new and highly scalable means of addressing biodiversity collapse – one based on finance.”

With the United Nations backing biodiversity credits whilst warning of greenwashing carbon offsets, much of the discussion has been focussed on the importance of having the right, and globally agreed, metrics for biodiversity uplift.

Professor Hill continues; “At Environment Bank, we are one of the first major investors into nature and natural capital. By financing large scale habitat creation and long-term management of large sites, we are restoring ecosystem function and significantly raising biodiversity value, in a measurable way. This gives clarity and certainty to corporate bodies who wish to become Nature Positive.

“For us, there are critical criteria that project developed sites need to achieve before they can claim to provide saleable ‘Nature Credits’ as we are calling our product.

“These include, all financing to be guaranteed for a minimum 30-year period to include habitat creation with regular monitoring and transparent reporting, demonstrable and quantified biodiversity uplift via an agreed metric, and credits based on new habitats created and managed not simply putting a line around sites with existing biodiversity value, which would then be greenwashing.

“Only by investing private finance into private land at scale will we have any hope of restoring biodiversity and averting a massive impact on the global human population.

“The financial markets are now alive to the risks of business as usual. We therefore need to work quickly to create large-scale projects that corporates can ‘buy-into’ based on robust and long-term contracts, along the lines that Environment Bank is putting into place across thousands of hectares in the UK.”

Since launching its award-winning Habitat Bank scheme last year, Environment Bank has seen enquiries soar, with over 60 new sites expected to be established in 2023.

A new Christmas Gift Box for pets has been launched, offering owners the chance to include their dogs in the big day with a present of sustainable and nutritious treats.

Blue Pet Co. (https://bluepetco.com/) has launched the gift box along with an expert guide on how to make sure your dog stays safe and calm during the busy festive season.

Dog owners say there’s no way they can leave pets off the gifting list – they’re part of the family, after all.

Yet, many pet gift options are made with unsustainable materials and come wrapped in excess packaging, while pet treats are often poor-quality and low nutritional value.

The new Christmas Gift Box (£9.95) from Irish pet nutrition company Blue Pet Co. is a new way to treat the family dog affordably, sustainably and nutritiously this Christmas.

Each Blue Pet Co. Christmas Gift Box includes a taster pack of each of the brand’s best-selling GoShine Chews, to help support skin and coat condition, GoActive Chews, for improved mobility, joint and muscle health, and GoSmile Sticks for healthy teeth and gums.

The supplements come in fully recyclable pouches and an outer gift box - with space for a Christmas message.

The Blue Pet Co. range is enriched with unique, highly nutritious marine extracts sustainably sourced from indigenous Irish seaweeds.

The supplements support a dog's skin, joint and oral health - to induce tail-wagging happiness.

Blue Pet Co. supplements are helpful to have to hand during the holiday season, which can be a confusing, overwhelming and over-exciting time for pets.

Blue Pet Co’s resident dog behaviourist Roz Pooley advises keeping your dog entertained and stimulated by cutting up Blue Pet Co. supplements into small pieces and putting them in a cardboard box with scrunched-up paper for foraging fun.

The secret behind the Blue Pet Co. range is its unique proprietary ingredients, PhyCoidanTM , PhytoMaraTM and PhytoDentTM. These bioactive ingredients are extracted from seaweed hand harvested off the Irish coastline, ensuring the delicate seabed goes undisturbed and biodiversity and supply are protected. The seaweed-derived molecules are combined to create Blue Pet Co.’s range of functional nutrition supplements that target critical areas of health concern in dogs - joints and muscles, skin and hair, teeth and gums.

Blue Pet Co. Is based in Kerry.

For dogs, the shift in activity and energy in the household at Christmas time can be confusing, overwhelming or over-exciting. It’s essential to try and prepare your dog for what is to come and manage the environment to keep them calm and safe.

Here are some tips from Blue Pet Co.’s resident dog behaviourist and animal trainer, Roz Pooley, to set your dog and household up for success.

1. Give your dog a safe place

Ensure your dog has a safe place to retreat to where it can rest undisturbed. For open-plan homes, an area may need to be created using a large puppy pen with blankets as visual barriers. Your dog may need to learn to associate this place with calm and enjoyable things. Prepare this place in good time and give your dog stimulating activities to do in there, such as a yummy chew, Kong, Lickimat or food puzzle etc. You can hide sticks and chews in a cardboard box with scrunched-up paper. Cutting up Blue Pet Co. supplements into small pieces can provide foraging fun.

A barrier can help children enthusiastically engage in their new toys without the dog’s involvement. Rather than tell a dog off for stealing things, set them up not to do this in the first place.

2. Give your dog something to do
Don’t want your dog underfoot while you cook? Don’t want them to scrounge at the table? Don’t want them to get in the way during the present opening time? Give them something to do! A long-lasting chew (given under supervision) or a frozen Kong can keep your dog out of the way without them becoming frustrated.

3. Be careful of certain foods
Cooked bones can splinter and cause internal damage when eaten, so be sure that all scraps go straight into an outside bin. Gravy, stuffing and other festive foods may have a high salt content that can upset stomachs, so licking the plate clean may not be best for your dog. Sweets, Chocolates, Liquors, Mince Pies and Christmas cake all contain ingredients that can make dogs very ill. Be sure to keep them in a secure cupboard or well out of reach. If presents contain food, ensure they are not left under the tree where your dog can access them - remember, they can sniff these things out even if they can’t see them.

Also, be mindful of your dog’s intake of food and treats. If you intend on giving them chews and treats to manage their behaviour, reduce their meal portions slightly to reduce overall calorie consumption. If your dog never experiences variation and higher value treats or foods, either avoid giving these or gradually introduce some variation in advance.

4. Consider penning your tree away
A decorated tree can be very enticing for your puppies or ball-obsessed dogs. Having your tree up high or penned away can prevent your dog from causing chaos and potentially ingesting dangerous items.

5. Ensure visitors know how to behave around your dog
If your dog is anxious around visitors, then ensure they have a safe place, as detailed in tip number one. If your dog is over-excited by visitors, giving them something to do to keep them busy may help redirect their behaviour onto something else. Visitors must be clear on what interactions help your dog feel confident or stay calm. Excitable voices, excessive attention, children running around, or unsolicited affection may promote undesired or dangerous behaviours.

If your dog has a history of resource guarding, ensure visitors understand not to take any item off your dog and to call you to deal with the issue. Text visitors in advance and remind them as they turn up, so they are well-informed on how to behave.

6. Bear in mind your dog’s existing exercise tolerance
If your dog is only walking for 45 minutes at a time, a three-hour Boxing Day walk may be too much for them. If your dog is used to three walks a day without fail, then a sudden drop to one walk a day may result in undesired behaviour.
Prepare your dog by increasing their walks a little, choosing a walk duration that suits them or increasing their rest periods in preparation for the big day.

7. Don’t forget alone-time
Too often, alone time is overlooked during the festive holiday season. After spending time in constant company, the sudden shift to your previous routine can then be a shock for dog. If your dog can cope when home alone, be sure to maintain this across the holiday season.

8. It may look cute, but is it fun for your dog?
Dog antlers, hats, jumpers, posing for the camera, cute pictures of kids with dogs. Too often, we see pictures of dogs looking uncomfortable in these situations. Look for signs that your dog is uncomfortable, such as the whites of the eyes showing, any signs of tension in the face, excessive lip licking or yawning, looking away or trying to move away. Your dog’s welfare is always more important than likes on social media.

As climate change continues to worsen, the statistics paint an ever-worrisome picture. This Halloween, here are five scary facts about the effects of climate change to help you understand the impact it has on our planet.

1. More than 1 million species face extinction
A landmark global assessment by the UN warns of a major biodiversity threat in which over a million species may be pushed to extinction within the coming decades. In the last 30 years, Australia has been plagued by episodes of extreme heat and wildfires due to climate change. The heat waves are devastating natural environments and killing thousands of animals who are unable to adapt quickly enough.
The flying fox, a species of megabat, is one such affected species. During a heatwave in 2020 that saw temperatures reach 42°C, thousands of megabats in one Melbourne Park alone died due to overheating.

2. The last decade was the hottest in 125,000 years
Our continued dependence on fossil fuels is warming up the planet at an unprecedented pace. The effects of global warming are already apparent all over the world with droughts, wildfires and floods, devastating communities. According to a report from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on the state of our climate, the past decade is likely to have been the hottest period in the last 125,000 years with temperatures rising much faster than before. However, if global emissions can hit Net Zero by 2050, it will still be possible to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

3. Climate change could be irreversible by 2030
According to a report governed by the IPCC, without drastic change, the world’s coral reefs face the threat of eradication along with the risk of extreme heat, widespread flooding, drought, and poverty. Critical action is needed in order to avoid the cataclysmic effects of global warming which could be irreversible by 2030. The IPCC state that emissions must peak by 2025 and reduce by 43% by 2050 in order to ensure that the effects of climate change do not become irreversible.

4. By 2050 there could be up to 200 million climate refugees
The International Organisation on Migration predicts that by 2050, 200 million people could be displaced by rising global temperatures. Climate change threatens the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people, with those who have contributed the least to climate change, standing to be the most affected. A recent IPCC report states that roughly half of the world’s population is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, with those in the most vulnerable regions, such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Haiti, being 15 times more likely to die due to floods, droughts and storms.

5. Food waste creates more greenhouse gas emissions than the aviation industry
An estimated one third of all food produced in the world goes to waste; that’s around 1.3 billion tons of food that either never leaves the farm or gets thrown away. But how does the odd loaf of stale bread or brown apple harm our planet? Each stage of the supply chain uses resources from our planet and produces greenhouse gas emissions; from farm, to fork, to bin.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions starts at home, therefore it’s important to minimise the over-production of food by ensuring that only the food that we are consuming makes it into our homes. By seeing to it that no good food ends up in the bin, we could reduce the emissions that are associated with food production.

The statistics detailed above shed light on only a small number of global issues related to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. It can be difficult to know where to start as a business to do your part, but TEAM Energy’s Net Zero and Carbon Reduction Consultancy services can help you transform the way you view and understand your energy and carbon emissions. TEAM can help your business get on its way to becoming Carbon Neutral and reaching Net Zero with a bespoke carbon reduction strategy. Please get in touch on 01908 886905 or visit their website.
