15 June 2023 – London, UK – Crossword Cybersecurity Plc (AIM:CCS, “Crossword”, the “Company” or the “Group”), the cybersecurity solutions company focused on cyber strategy and risk, has today revealed that an analysis of online criminal markets by its Trillion risk monitoring platform, shows UK universities are at high risk of major cyber security incidents launched using breached credentials. The Trillion team discovered 2.2 million breached credentials available on the dark web for the top 100 UK institutions, with 57% belonging to the 24 Russell Group Universities.

With over 2.41m staff and students at UK universities in the 21/22 academic year (HESA student and staff records) studying for degrees, including 679,000 students from outside the UK, the potential reach and impact of a breach is serious, placing personal information at risk and disrupting the studies of millions that have chosen the UK as the place to invest for their future.

Research facilities in the crosshairs

The UK university sector is renowned for the quality of its research facilities, driving innovation across many sectors including healthcare and technology, as well as government funded programmes of national importance such as nuclear energy and defence. The analysis by Crossword found that 54% of the breached credentials came from UK universities with research facilities.

Location and size matter
------------------------
The location and size of universities has an impact on the extent to which credentials have been breached, with London substantially at more risk, with 506,330 (20%) credentials breached, followed by the South East (334,251 – 13%) and Scotland (306,873 – 12%).

Other key findings related to size and location include:

● Top 30 universities are up to 50% more likely to have breached credentials than any other institution in the remaining top 100
● London universities have more breached credentials (506,330) than Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland combined (465,767)
● Largest segment of breached credentials by university student population:
o More than 30,000 students - 38% had 20,000-30,000 breached credentials
o 20,000-30,000 students – 39% had 10,000-20,000 breached credentials
o 10,000-20,000 students – 38% had 10,000-20,000 breached credentials
o 5,000-10,000 students – 29% had 2,000-4,000 breached credentials

Commenting on the findings, Stuart Jubb, Group Managing Director at Crossword Cybersecurity Plc, said: “UK universities and research facilities are among the most respected in the world, and protecting that reputation includes protecting the students, staff and information that is shared with them for research projects by government, the public and private sector, through effective cyber security practices. We recognise that these environments are amongst the most uniquely challenging to protect with overlapping requirements for secrecy and openness - so many attack paths need to be factored. We believe that cyber security practices for all organisations, not just the education sector should include the proactive monitoring for stolen credentials, and a requirement for multi-factor authentication.”

Advice for universities and other organisations wanting to protect accounts against credentials breaches:

● Use Two Factor Authentication (2FA) on user accounts - Using 2FA on internal systems is a good start. But this does not always protect you when working with external partners, such as law firms, expense portals etc, as their systems may not require it. So you should always remain vigilant.

● Does single sign-on (SSO) protect us? Not really. If an attacker can obtain a valid password for your SSO application then they can use it for wider access. If they can access your email account then they can probably request password resets, which they can then carry out.

● Resetting passwords is only a temporary fix - The problem goes away until one of your new passwords is leaked again by another site you are using. So you need to maintain an ongoing process of protection.

● Have a policy that enforces complex passwords - The NCSC website has good guidance on choosing secure passwords. But remember your passwords still need to be unique for each website. And even a complex password, if it’s stolen from a 3rd party, can still be used against you.

● Use a 3rd party tool to monitor for breaches – These tools can automatically monitor and track stolen credentials, alerting organisations and users to a breach. Trillion also applies proprietary risk scoring algorithms to rapidly alert organisations to the presence of their user credentials on the dark web.

As London Tech Week kicks off, specialist recruitment firm, Robert Half, has highlighted the need for skills development to be prioritised if the UK’s position as the third leading tech economy is to be maintained or improved.

In the expert’s own analysis of trends and data across the tech landscape, it highlighted the powerful position the UK is already in, with the country home to more high-growth tech companies than any other European destination.

With the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport also publishing information that suggests the UK retained its top spot as a tech leader in Europe and came third globally, it’s clear that the country has cemented its position as a leading tech nation.

However, as Craig Freedberg, Regional Director at Robert Half highlighted, skills development and talent attraction are becoming increasingly tough:

“The UK – and in particular, London – is a stronghold for technological innovation and is home to a vast number of specialist businesses that have gone from strength-to-strength in recent times. I think it’s all too easy to underestimate just how prolific the UK tech scene is at the moment, particularly in a post-Brexit landscape where the country’s overall strength as a destination of choice for many tech professionals has, according to some commentators, been impacted.

“Our analysis shows that the UK is still thriving, but we also know that skills shortages are increasingly putting this at risk. The study, conducted by Coleman Parkes Research among 360 cybersecurity decision makers in the UK and U.S., found that 78% of enterprises in the U.S. and 58% in the UK have increased cybersecurity investment in the last year, while 81% of enterprises are looking to work with new vendors in the next 12 months. The top three solutions for investment are endpoint security, application security and fraud prevention. However, despite searching for new suppliers, 37% of U.S. and 24% of UK enterprises expect to see a cut in the next year.

Against this backdrop, cybersecurity vendors need to adapt their approach to generating new business. There are a number of approaches that vendors can take to maximise their exposure in a crowded market and increase their chances of being selected for RFP processes. Findings include:

• Generating vendor awareness requires a mix of channels – Cybersecurity technology buyers confirm that the most influential channels in building their awareness of suppliers are industry analysts, followed by broader business events, business technology media and trade media. In the U.S., industry analysts (78%), business technology media (77%) and trade and business media (both 76%) are regarded as highly impactful. In the UK, broader business events (70%), industry analysts (69%), industry-specific events (67%) and trade media (66%) are the strongest channels for generating awareness. When it comes to content for generating awareness, social media took the top spot.

• Long-form content is crucial to cybersecurity vendors’ content strategies – Long-form copy – written either by vendors or industry analysts – proved to be the most popular, with blogs emerging as the winner in both markets (92% in the U.S. and 93% in the UK), followed by industry analyst reports (88% overall) and case studies (87% overall). Cybersecurity technology buyers seek out content that demonstrates vendors can solve their problems, understand their business, prove the value of their solutions, and be a trusted source of industry knowledge.

• Value for money is the biggest factor influencing investments, but a strong track record is also key – The vendor attribute most important in driving selection is value for money, according to both U.S. (61%) and UK (48%) respondents. Yet economic constraints are not the only factor: values and ethics follow closely behind (60% and 47%, respectively). In the current climate, buyers are demonstrating caution when it comes to spending but are demanding more for their money rather than going for the cheaper option. Meanwhile, they are seeking partners that share their principles and ethics.

“The cybersecurity landscape has weathered many storms in the last three years. As global economic uncertainty deepens, companies are being more cautious in their approach to budget allocation,” said Florie Lhuillier, Head of Cybersecurity at CCgroup. “Naturally, this will have implications for how businesses address their cybersecurity investments now and in the future. They will be more careful in scrutinising the available options and proactively seek evidence that a vendor can solve their specific problem.”

“An integrated marketing strategy must be designed entirely around a potential customer’s needs, experiences, and expectations: cybersecurity vendors must therefore have a 360-degree view of their buyers’ behaviour and tailor their strategy accordingly. Understanding the dynamics that drive vendor and solution awareness, combined with selection and purchasing patterns, empowers cybersecurity vendors to succeed in a highly competitive market.”

CCgroup commissioned the specialist B2B research agency, Coleman Parkes Research, to survey 360 cybersecurity decision markers (C-levels and Heads) across the UK and the U.S., who have made major technology purchases in the last 12 months.

Diversity and Inclusion:
Open-source software promotes the inclusion of under-represented groups in the IT industry because it enables anyone to contribute to the core CMS, regardless of gender, ethnicity, learning differences or socio-economic status.

Umbraco has established a Female Mentoring Programme, in partnership with the University College of Odense, with clear career paths and leadership training.
2022 saw the formation of the Umbraco Accessibility Team of volunteers, who raise awareness of ways to make Umbraco websites more inclusive for end-users who are blind, deaf, have learning differences, or limited mobility. The team are working to ensure that the Umbraco back-office meets WAI Level AA accessibility criteria.

Chief Operating Officer Javier Miranda comments, “Up to two billion people have difficulty using websites that are not designed with accessibility in mind. Developer Shortage:
Talented developers are in short supply and can afford to be selective about the technologies that they work with. A survey undertaken by Danebury Research among digital agencies and enterprises in the technology, retail, and public sector, revealed that almost a quarter (24.7%) believed that having a legacy CMS made their organisation less attractive to talented developers. Umbraco is addressing this challenge by ensuring that its core CMS continues to be user-friendly, flexible and sustainable, so that it remains an attractive choice for developers.

To understand the needs of developers and end-users, Umbraco regularly meets with its open-source community and publicly recognises the top contributors with Most Valuable People (MVP) awards and inclusion in its Hall of Fame: 67 MVPs were recognised in 2022 and there were 1458 attendees at Umbraco’s annual developer event, Codegarden.

To empower the next generation of developers, Umbraco runs Coding Class for school children, and free Umbraco training and certification for computer science students at UNCC in Charlotte USA, UCL in London UK, and SDU in Odense Denmark. Data Privacy:

Sustainability:
Umbraco began calculating its carbon footprint in 2022 and now has a tool and methodology allowing the company to identify the greatest emission sources. Hosting Umbraco Cloud and HeartCore projects represents more than 50% of Umbraco’s estimated 1,100 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent. Owing to Microsoft’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, websites that have been migrated to the new .NET versions of Umbraco became at least 50% more efficient, leading to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.

The company’s second largest source of CO2 emissions is business travel, specifically flights. Umbraco is working to reduce this through more sustainable business practices, including meeting online wherever possible.

As part of its journey to becoming carbon neutral, Umbraco has sponsored 30 verified carbon avoidance projects through Ecologi and funded the planting of 19,122 trees. The company headquarters switched to renewable energy and installed water dispensers to discourage the use of single-use plastic bottles, and waste is sorted to encourage recycling. Umbraco also examines the carbon footprint of existing and new suppliers.

The company has just launched its Sustainability Team, who will promote awareness of best practices and open-source tools for designing low-carbon and carbon-aware websites. Umbraco CMS product lead, Lasse Fredslund, observes, “Building eco-friendly websites usually means that they’re performing more efficiently, and loading faster, which is also better for user experience, sales conversions and business.”

Witkiss also spent six years at IRIS Software, responsible for their accountancy products.

This is the third leadership hire by Lewis since he took charge of Ciphr earlier this year.

London - 1 June 2023. CommCon, the only residential conference in the open source media industry, returns in person on 19th June 2023. All attendees stay on-site for an immersive four day experience, including the three day conference.
