Hello everyone – time for some customer feedback. Rowperfect has been selling the MK1 Magik oarlocks for five years – we just ran out of the sculling model and would like your input. [note we still have the sweep MK1 in stock and the pitching inserts]

Should we re-stock? We have to buy 48 pairs….

Should we discontinue? Customers can still buy from the manufacturer in Australia (a bit more pricey given AU$ exchange rates)

How much does a second hand single scull cost?

The answer is anything from £400 to upwards of £5,000. It depends on age and condition of the boat.

In the UK here are great websites where you can buy and sell rowing single sculls

Sculling Boat Sales – the professional buyers and sellers of singles in the UK. Ric Colborne knows what every brand is worth and will help you sell your boat and give guidance on pricing. Better still, they will buy your old boat and refurbish it for re-sale. Great service if you want a quick deal and cash.
Rowing Service Noticeboard - this is a listing advert website where you write what you want or are selling and hope that someone reads it and gets in touch. Commercial sellers pay a small annual fee to advertise. It’s un-moderated and gets a lot of traffic from people who know it – but not everyone does.

Rand Racing also has a free listing service for second hand boats on their website. Since these guys are in the Thames Valley and also do repairs it probably is worth using them to appraise your boat.

They have a helpful Choosing a Rowing Boat guide and a Buying a Used Boat guide.

Clubs buying second hand rowing boats

Get yourself a copy of Mike Davenport’s e book “Buy it right” - written by a professional boatman / rigger who works in the US University boat club system, Mike really knows the detail of the issues and sets out a very clear 8 step process to ensuring your club buys the right equipment for the right price.

This is a reference book your club committee should have on their bookshelf (even though it’s virtual) because teaching new committee members how to choose and purchase equipment is a recurring job.

Rowperfect new world record for 2k

An Auckland Rowing Club member, Monty Wawatai, has recorded 5 minutes 57 seconds (5:57) for 2000 meters.

2k World Record 5:57 on Rowperfect

He used a Rowperfect fitted with the new RowQuix rowing shoes.

Monty is 51years old and beat the 5:58 he set last year.

We presume this would be a new World Record?

Anyone know differently?

Rowing glute and back stretches advice

Rebecca emailed us to ask “Do you have a blog post about stretching of the glutes and back? If not do you have any tips of advice on how to maximize the flexibility of the main muscles used in rowing ? thanks”
Here are links to two articles that you may find helpful. Both by Ben Rodford who has written extensively on how to be your own support team for rowing.

Managing and avoiding lower back injury for rowing part 1 – posture and part 2 strength and flexibility

I personally find that Yoga for Rowers is the book with the best stretches for glutes. We sell it in our shop as a print or e book.

From my own experience, doing stretches before and after each and every outing is the best way to recover from stiffness and also improve flexibility and strength for the future.

The stretch in the photo “pigeon yoga post” with the back leg straight is amazing for glutes – you can also lie on the ground stretching your arms past your front leg. I found this very helpful when I first started sculling and was using my bum muscles properly for the first time!

Ever checked out the questions social media site called Quora? It’s got some great rowing quesitons and I’m sure you will contribute to the discussion. Some of them are hopelessly idiotic like “Could a crew boat medal in the Olympics without a coxswain?“. How daft – it’d be disqualified if it was supposed to have a cox.

Maybe we should start a new event – coxed crews without coxswains!

We write a plan based on what we can do not what the opposition can do.
The crew is allowed to make subtle changes during the race based on what the opposition does.
The coach facilitates the writing of the plan but it’s written collaboratively.
At the elite leve the crew has to play a big part in formulating the plan
For Clubs and Schools the coach may take the lead setting down the plan components
Always race 100% – don’t play tactics
