For styling tips, you may like my post on how to wear ankle boots. They can be a little tricky at first until you get used to how to pair them with different styles of pants, but once you get the hang of it, they’re a great way to take your outfits from summer into fall.

These aren’t necessarily the trendiest or the most popular styles this year, but they’re my personal favorites from my wardrobe at the moment.

My 5 Favorite Ankle Boots

#1. Jeffrey Campbell Burman Split Shaft Booties – This taupe color goes with so much! I love the casual, slightly edgy vibe of this bootie. The low heel makes them super comfortable, and the low shaft makes them easy to pair with ankle length skinny jeans. I’ve already styled these in this post, and they’re featured in several outfits I’ve already shot for 26 Days of Fall Fashion.

#2. Vince Camuto Fritan Booties – These grey suede booties are fun because they’re a little dressier than some other styles I have. I snagged this pair at the end of last season when they came in a Trunk Club, but they’re still available at Nordstrom Rack. A similar pair this year is the Vince Camuto Fileana split shaft bootie. I love the cut outs and the split shaft as well as the tapered block heel. You can see mine styled in this post.

#3. Vince Camuto Karinta Block Heel Booties – These are more for summer/early fall, but I love the whipstitching and the sling back / pee-toe combo. Super sexy for booties, especially in the black! I styled them in this post, and I can’t wait to wear them again.

#4. Sam Edelman Blake Booties – I purchased these at the end of last year, and I particularly like them with bootcut jeans, but you can wear them with skinnies as well. Mine are available right now at 6pm.com, or a similar style this year is the Nine West Argyle bootie although it’s a little dressier and not quite as rugged as mine. You can how I styled mine last spring in this post. I can’t wait to wear them again this fall!

#5. Vince Camuto Kensa Peep-Toe Booties – These are more of a spring and summer bootie, but I’m including them because they’re definitely one of my favorites. Between the blush color and the perforations and the open toe, I think they probably need to be put away for fall and winter, but I’m going to miss them!

First allow me to make a disclaimer or three. I am not a makeup expert, and I’ve never been that good at it. People often think that because I wear it, I love it, but I really resent the time it takes to put on makeup in the morning, and I get frustrated with some of the application — like eye shadow! I think eye shadow will always confound me.

I’m also not one to do a lot of experimentation with makeup. I tend to find something I like and stick with it for years, although I do try to stay aware of the trends so I don’t get stuck in a rut.

With all that said, I’m fortunate that I’ve had my makeup done by a professional quite a few times because of this blog, and every time, I ask questions and try to learn something. All that to say, I’m probably better at telling you what to do than doing it myself.

So here goes! With most of these tips, you’ll notice a common theme. Going overboard with our makeup and under-use are both no-nos. When we’re younger, the natural look is cute and carefree, but as we get older, it can really drag us down. Conversely, overdoing it and wearing too much makeup can make us look cartoonish and silly, so finding a happy medium is key.

7 Makeup Mistakes That Can Age You

#1. Wearing the wrong foundation (or no foundation.) As we get older, wearing foundation becomes more important, however, the wrong color or heavily caked-on foundation can definitely age us. I like to have my foundation matched at the beauty counter to be sure I’m wearing the right shade.

In the summertime, I like to tan my body, but I never intentionally tan my face so I switch to a darker foundation to match the rest of my skin. During the transition seasons, I will often mix my summer and winter colors together to get the right shade. You never want your face to be darker than the rest of your body, but when your face is lighter than your body, you look like a ghost, and that’s not a good look either!

Everyone’s skin is different so there is no one size fits all foundation, but I can tell you what I use that I like for my dry skin. (Also, I’m only 45, so I realize that as I get older, these products may not continue to be the best.)

For the past few years, I’ve alternated between MAC Studio Sculpt (for fuller coverage) and Jane Iredale PurePressed Base when I want a more natural look. Sometimes I use both. I like the Jane Iredale on top of the MAC for the most coverage — usually only when I’m going to be taking photos for the blog. I use this Sigma F80 Flat Kabuki brush for applying both. When I’m just using the PrePressed Base, I also use the Jane Iredale Hydration Spray to set it and also to keep my face looking moist and fresh.

Sometimes women go without foundation because they feel like it’s too heavy, but going too natural is aging as well. To sheer out a foundation that you feel is too heavy, mix it on the back of your hand with a drop of moisturizer and then apply. This is basically creating your own tinted moisturizer.

Also, don’t forget to exfoliate! Regular exfoliation helps slough off the dead skin and helps your foundation to go on smoothly and evenly.

#2. Blush that’s not blended in. It’s really important to wear a blush in a shade that suits your skin tone and then to blend it in really well. You also don’t want to get it too high (close to your eyes) or too close to your nose because that looks amateur.

Blush Application Tip >> Start your blush right under the pupil and then sweep it along the cheekbone and upward, blending into the hairline.

Your blush should be visible but not super noticeable, and you definitely don’t want to see a line of demarcation where your blush starts and stops. Sometimes a bigger blush brush can help with this. I’m fond of this Sigma Beauty F10 powder/blush brush.

Cream blush is a good option too, as we get older and our skin gets drier. I still use a powder blush, but I know I need to be more careful about not getting it too close to my nose or eyes.

#3. Wearing harsh lip liner or lipstick that’s too dark. As we age, going lighter with our lipstick is generally a good idea. This is not to say that you should never wear a dark lipstick, but it can be tricky as we get older. I tend to keep my lipstick lighter and more neutral and go darker on my eyes.

You also want to be sure your lip liner isn’t creating a noticeable line around your lips. I actually line my lips an then fill in with the lip liner, and I apply lipstick on top of that. Not only does it make your lipstick color last longer, but it avoids that darker outline of lip liner that can look old fashioned. I usually apply a gloss on top of it all to keep my lips moist and looking fuller.

I’m a HUGE fan of MAC lip liners. They have the best pigment that I’ve found, and they go on smoothly and easily. My favorite color is Spice. It’s a great neutral base for just about any color lipstick I want to apply. (The exception to this is red. I have a separate red liner I use for red lipsticks.)

#4. Under-applying lipstick and/or allowing it to wear off. Like most makeup tips, finding a happy medium with our lipstick is ideal. While wearing lipstick that’s too dark can be garish, wearing no lipstick can really drag you down.

I didn’t used to let it bother me when my lipstick wore off, and I think it looked okay when I was younger, but nowadays I’m more intentional about reapplying throughout the day. I recommend carrying a nice moist, neutral shade in your purse that you can add to whatever you put on in the morning to carry you through the day.

When I’m going out in the evening or expecting visitors, I try to remember to run upstairs and freshen up first. I didn’t used to bother, but I started noticing how tired and bedraggled I look by dinnertime, and now I make it a point to do so.

Ain’t aging grand!?!

#5. Lining just the lower eyelid. Eyeliner isn’t always necessary, but whatever you do, never line just the lower lid. In fact, I never use eyeliner on my lower lid because it’s too harsh. Instead, I apply some eye shadow with a small smudge brush for a more subtle look.

Eyeliner Application Tip >> Always be sure to get your eye liner into the lash line so there’s no skin showing between your eyelashes and the liner. Also try to avoid a harsh line for daytime and smudge your eyeliner so it blends into the eye shadow and looks more natural.

#6. Wearing harsh black eyeliner. Here’s where I’m going to be a bit of a hypocrite. I love black eyeliner and I wear black eyeliner, although I know there will come a time when I’ll have to soften it up some. Mine is a gel (this Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Eyeliner in a pot), and I try to smudge it so it’s not too harsh, but with my dark coloring, I still like it. I apply with the small smudge brush I mentioned above.

However, in general, harsh makeup is aging — dark lip colors and blush that’s too dark and not blended, as discussed above, and black eyeliner falls into that category as well. Try grey or brown instead.

#7. Neglecting your eyebrows. As we age, our eyebrows tend to get thinner, so filling them in helps keep them more shapely and well defined, and as a result, we look younger and more natural.

I’ve tried about every eyebrow pencil/gel/powder that I can get my hands on, and my favorite by far is Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz. I use Dark Brown (Brunette). It’s super fine and goes on smoothly and easily. I use small strokes to mimic eyebrow hairs, but it also blends easily and wipes off nicely if you go outside the lines by accident. It’s a mechanical pencil so you never have to sharpen it, and it has a brush attached. I buy them in twos so I never run out.

I’m sure there are some more makeup tips I could share, but I think this hits the big ones.

Overall, the best general tip to keep your makeup from aging you is to strive to keep things light and natural. This is definitely a situation of less is more — but that is not to say you should go without. Again, finding that happy medium is key.

Let’s get started!

For your reference, I’m 5’5 and 135# (on a good day) and I’m short-waisted with a slightly hourglass shape. I tend to run between sizes so I’m usually a 6 or 8 in pants and jeans and a small or medium in tops.

I was drawn to this first top because, well, STRIPES of course, but also for the flattering v-neck and the button detail on the shoulders. I tried to get a close-up shot for you. The stripes are black and the background has a hint of taupe so even though it’s linen and has short sleeves, I think it will carry me well into fall considering how warm September can be around here.

I actually wore this top with black jeans and black ballet flats to go out to breakfast yesterday with some of my mom friends, and I was thinking it would also be perfect for Back To School Night at the elementary school.

For size reference, I have a small. Definitely size down in this top. Even in the small, I feel like it’s a little boxy.

I thought this long pointelle duster cardigan was really cute. I didn’t bring it home with me, but I’m keeping my eye on it. It’s lightweight and very soft. For size reference, I’m wearing the small.

Not loving this blue floral top, and I can’t find it online. The keyhole neckline and ruffle placement do nothing for me, although I do think this would be cute on someone who is smaller up top. If you like blue, this one is a nice option. In fact, I may have just added it to my shopping cart! I’m also wearing a small in this top, but it’s a little snug.

I like this border print top quite a lot. These colors are really calling to me this fall. I’m not sure this is the most flattering silhouette on me, so I didn’t bring it home, but it would be cute on someone. LOL!

This peasant dress is adorable — I love these colors! Again, I don’t typically wear this silhouette, and I didn’t buy it, but I’m thinking it could be really fun with booties for fall. I like that it is fully lined – it basically has a built-in slip. I’m pretty sure I was wearing a small in this as well.

I also tried on (and purchased) that blush floral neck tie blouse that day. Their tops are still BOGO 50% off!

Alright! Moving on to my latest Trunk Club delivery!

I told my stylist that I wanted to try some fall trends in tops, so she sent me an assortment of floral, velvet, lace, and statement sleeves. The prices range quite a bit, but it’s always fun to see what’s trending, even if some of the prices are out of my budget.

I didn’t style each of the pieces with different shoes and pants as I often do. I was trying to get through this quickly so I just wore my AG skinnies from the #NSale and my go-to summer sandals with everything.

I love the colors in this cold shoulder silk shirt, and the print is pretty, but I didn’t care for the way it fit me. The brand is Paige, and it’s pretty spendy, so needless to say, it’s going back.

This Rag & Bone merino wool sweater has exposed seams and some subtle detail in the knit that makes it a little more special than a typical v-neck sweater. I like the shorter length and the rich port color, but the v-neck is a little too low and narrow for me, and overall I just don’t love it enough to justify the price.

Now this navy bell sleeve sweater, I like! The brand is Chelsea28, which is a nice mid-range brand that makes on-trend, quality pieces. I was disparaging the jewel neck on my Insta Story, but I think the cool sleeves and the soft ribbed knit might make up for the fact that I don’t love the neckline.

The material on this sweater is super soft and cozy, and the sleeves have two layers, so there’s an under layer that is snug to the arm and keeps you warm, while the overlay has that gorgeous accordion pleated bell sleeve.

I added a long necklace to help draw the eye down and towards the waist since the neckline is so high. I think it works, although I think I might prefer a longer necklace.

FYI, if you have a smaller chest, a jewel neckline can be very flattering. I just prefer a wider, more open neckline on me. For size reference, I’m wearing a medium, and this sweater also comes in grey, blush, and red.

This grey BP. cardigan was part of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, and I have it in burgundy in the medium. My stylist sent this to me in a small, and I think I like this fit better. I usually size up in the BP. brand because it’s juniors sizing, but in this case, this sweater seems to run big. I’m on the fence with this one. I don’t have a grey cardigan and the price is nice, but I might prefer something a little higher quality.

This cable v-neck sweater is by Vince, and the quality is amazing, plus I’m a sucker for a grey v-neck sweater, but this is super spendy so I’m on the fence. It’s supposed to have a voluminous fit, but even in a size small, this seems kind of bulky. I think I can do better.

This is another fun bell sleeve sweater with a jewel neck. This one is by Leith, another mid-price brand that I like a lot. I love the pink adobe my Trunk Club stylist sent, and it also comes in tan, grey, brown, and black. The knit is nice and soft, and the price is great for the quality. I also like the length. It just needs an iron! For size reference, this is a medium, and I like the shorter 22″ length.

Again, I’m a little hesitant because of the neckline, but perhaps a necklace will make up for that.

This v strap tee is more of a summer top, but it comes in some colors that will work well on warmer fall days, plus it would be cute layered under a cardigan. This is a medium, which is what I typically order in BP. tees, and I think it’s the right size although it’s a little lowcut in the front. It’s a fun top, and the price is great, so I’m tempted to keep it and wash and dry it and hope it shrinks up a bit.

Florals are trending, and I guess big florals are a thing now? This slouchy floral sweatshirt is totally baffling to me. I don’t think it’s supposed to fit this way — at least, it looks a lot smaller online. I have to assume the sizing got messed up even though it says it’s a small.

Velvet is a another huge trend this fall, and this charcoal velvet blazer has potential, but I don’t care for the length (or the price) so I’m sending it back.

In case you’re wondering, I would style a velvet blazer with a very feminine lace and silk cami, skinny jeans, and pumps. I like the idea of it so I’m going to be on the lookout for one that fits me better.

Finally, my stylist sent this Chelsea28 lace sheath. I typically love a sheath, but this one is a little too small for me. I think it would look better on someone who is smaller chested. For size reference, this is a medium.

I showed this bell sleeve v-neck sweater in my last Trunk Club unboxing post. I ordered a medium during the #NSale, and I decided to send it back for the small. This is the small.

I had high hopes, but I really don’t care for the fit. I don’t like the way it hangs, it’s just a tad too short, and the neckline is a little too low. I do think the small is the right size, though.

I ordered this hooded sweater from Athleta, and I think it’s really cute. I like the fit and the funnel neck and the hood. It’s supposed to be long, and it will look better with boots or sneakers for a more balanced silhouette.

You could technically wear this with leggings, but I probably won’t. It’s a little on the spendy side, but Athleta runs sales occasionally so keep an eye out if you like it. For size reference, this is a small.

Finally, this silk & cashmere v-neck sweater is from Banana Republic. I got it when they were running a 40% off sale, and it’s the raspberry color. It’s a gorgeous sweater, great quality, super soft. The pointelle stitching down the center of the front and back makes it a little more special than a plain pullover.

This is the small, but I’m debating exchanging it for a medium for a slightly more relaxed fit. I think either size will be fine, it just depends on how snug I want it to fit. It’s a dry clean only sweater, so keep that in mind. I don’t mind dry cleaning my sweaters, and the quality of this one is worth a little extra special care.

Yes, transition season is here, and the question I get asked most this time of year is how to dress for fall when it’s still warm outside. I get it, we’re tired of our sundresses and flip-flops and anxious to bring out our sweaters and booties, but Mother Nature never got the memo that Labor Day is the unofficial start of fall.

There are no “rules” per se these days (don’t put away those white jeans!) but I do try to straddle that warm/cold line by wearing outfits look intentionally Fall but also accommodate the weather.

Here are some tips and ideas for how to transition your outfits from Summer to Fall, especially when it’s still warm outside.

How to Transition Your Outfits From Summer To Fall

#1. Wear darker, richer colors. This is not to say that you can’t wear brights or pastels in the fall, but they are no longer my go-to as they are in summertime. Start opting for darker colors in lightweight fabrics and styles that will keep you comfortable but still look like fall.

For example, I wore this burgundy halter top with black jeans and leopard pumps to go on a dinner date with my husband one warm evening last September. The rich, deep color palette says fall, but I was comfortable in the sleeveless top.

A casual example is this plum colored tee with jeans and grey Converse that I wore to a school event last weekend. Again, it’s perfectly acceptable for summer, but I probably wouldn’t have put this exact outfit together a month ago. It looks more like fall to me.

#2. Throw a cardigan on it! Take any of your favorite shorts-and-t-shirt outfits and add a cardigan, denim jacket, or utility vest. If it’s still hot enough for sandals, stick with brown or something that looks more like fall. Or you can always wear booties for a fun, sassy look.

I wore this outfit one day last fall, and it was fun, but I admit I felt a little over-the-top with the booties. I’m usually more comfortable in sandals or Converse with this look.

Here’s one I wore back in July with sandals, but it will actually work just as well in September. I do continue wearing these sand patent sandals into fall, but usually I’ll opt for a darker brown leather like my Lucky Brand Adinis sandals.

Another option is to throw a denim jacket over shorts and a t-shirt. Swap out your usual sandals for ballet flats to complete the transition look.

And that leads us to #3!

#3. Bring out your booties, ballet flats, and loafers.

I usually put my espadrilles and summery sandals away after Labor Day and bring out my ankle boots and ballet flats. I may still occasionally wear wedge sandals with leather wrapped heels and block heel sandals — especially if they are grey or brown, but I usually opt for more foot coverage. This year’s loafer trend is perfect for in-between weather, especially the ones that are open in the back.

For example, I wore this knit tank dress with sandals last August, but in September I paired it with ankle boots for more of a fall look. Also note how the color says fall, while the sleeveless silhouette is cool and comfortable for warmer fall weather. This would also be cute with a long cardigan or denim jacket on top for cooler fall days.

Here are a few other transitional styling ideas with another sleeveless knit dress. (I clearly have a thing for green dresses!) I love these grey block heel lace-up sandals for a transitional shoe. They’re super comfy too.

I posted this look a few weeks ago, and I think it’s a great transitional look. A t-shirt and jeans with espadrilles or strappy sandals says summer, but a t-shirt and jeans with ankle boots says fall!

And of course, those are colored jeans, but I do this with blue jeans and colored t-shirts as well. I usually opt for a rich fall tone on top like burgundy or plum (see #1) but olive, grey, or white works too.

#4. Switch to darker nail polish. Yes, even changing your nail polish can make your outfits look more like fall. I’m a huge fan of dark blue and burgundy in the fall, but greys and browns are nice too.

This outfit is a good example. I wear this top with light wash jeans all summer long, but simply wearing a darker nail polish on my toes makes it look a little more fall-appropriate. The gold sandals work fine for fall as well, but I might opt for a suede mule next time.

#5. Wear white jeans with fall tops. This is for when weather gets colder, but I love pairing white jeans with earth tones or chunky sweaters and boots once there’s a chill in the air. Okay, I know I said 5 tips, but one other thing to consider is your handbag. I have some bags that I carry year ’round and others that I put away for fall and winter. Simply swapping out accessories such as nail colors, shoes, and handbags can take many a summer outfit right into fall without any other adjustments.

Hello, hello! It’s a crisp and beautiful Sunday morning here in Pennsylvania, and it feels quite fall-like out there. Rarely does the weather line up with the school calendar, but it will definitely feel like the First Day of School tomorrow, which is kind of nice.

I hope those of you in the path of Harvey are faring okay. It’s weird to me that the weather can be so lovely here and so dreadful just a few states over.

I’ve skipped my last few Coffee Talk posts because I was trying to fit in a run and a photo shoot before church, but I can’t run today so here I am! I turned my ankle pretty hard a few days ago, and it’s right in the area that was injured twice before, so I’ve been trying to take it easy. It seems to be okay as long as I don’t overdo it, and then I can feel that it’s still recovering. I’m just hoping to avoid any major injury.

Yesterday I decided to practice what I preach, and I did a thorough closet purge. Because of this blog, I cycle clothing through my closet a lot faster than what is normal for most people, but I still find myself needing to do a thorough purge every once in a while.

So I took everything out down to the bare walls, just like I talk about in my How to Purge Your Closet post, and I handled every piece and took a quick gut-check. I ask myself questions like, Do I love it? Does it fit me well? Do I have anything to wear with it? Do I need it? 

Only if the answer to those four questions is a resounding YES does the item go back into my closet.

I also took advantage of the mild temperatures and went up into the attic to go through my fall and winter stuff from last year. I brought down all the ankle boots and suede ballet flats and pumps that I’d put away for the season as well as a few of my favorite neutral sweaters that have a fall vibe. I got my closet all organized, and it is so nice to go in there now. I even paid my daughter to dust all the shelves.

I know, some of you are going to say it sure doesn’t sound like I was taking it easy yesterday! The closet project only took me an hour or so, but I was definitely feeling it so I laid around with my foot up for a few hours. Actually, while I was laying there, my husband went through his drawers and did a thorough purge. I guess he felt inspired. We still need to do his side of the closet, but that may not happen for a while.

After all that was wrapped up, we went out for a quick dinner at a local Asian restaurant. The kids declined to come and settled for boxed mac-and-cheese and chicken fingers from the freezer. What is wrong with kids today?

Anyway, we decided to try a new place and it was just okay. We have others we like better, but it was a nice atmosphere for being located in one of those strip malls, and since Paul was gone most of the week, it gave us a chance to catch up without interruptions. After dinner, we hung out with friends on their patio. It was a gorgeous night for it, and they had a fire in the fire pit. Of course, now my hair smells like campfire, lol.

So the kids go back to school tomorrow, and the rat race begins! We have to start getting my son moving on his college applications, and all of the back-to-school activities are starting to fill up my calendar. At church, we’re starting to plan our fall and holiday events (I’m on the women’s committee) and all of my kids have birthdays coming up. I have an October, November, and a December birthday in addition to all of the holidays that occur during those same months, so this time of year is always a bit frantic for me. My Facebook feed is full of parents leaving their kids at college, many for the first time, and I had to put my phone down last night and walk away so I didn’t start to bawl. I’m trying to enjoy this year of lasts with my son, but it is bittersweet to say the least.

Well, I’m off to get ready for church, and afterwards I plan to enjoy a lazy afternoon on the deck with a book, soaking up the last rays of summer. Yes, I know summer officially goes till Sept 22, but with the kids going back to school tomorrow, it definitely feels like the end to me.

I’m keeping those in Harvey’s path in prayer and I hope you all have a blessed Sunday!

         

 

 

You may have seen some of these looks on the blog, but most are outfits I’ve worn in my daily life that didn’t necessarily make a blog post.

This first look is what I wore for a Saturday night double date with good friend of ours. I remember struggling quite a bit with what to wear that night because everything is starting to feel tired and done before.

This orange blossom top is low inventory, but a printed top with dark jeans and neutral wedge sandals always works. The key is to make sure the individual pieces have a flattering fit and create the proper proportions when worn together. By the way, this top is literally like $12 right now. It’s a great work wear piece and looks really nice under a blazer. There are a couple sizes left. I’m wearing a small, for reference.

You could easily substitute bootcut jeans in this outfit if you prefer that fit. I actually think bootcut jeans would have improved the proportion of this look. I feel like my legs look a little short due to the dark wash of the jeans sandwiched between the the light shoes and light top. If the top were an inch shorter, the outfit would work better overall.

Also, these jeans are a cropped length, which works well with these strappy sandals, but that can also shorten the leg when worn with light shoes. Oooh, and they’re 20% off right now! If you’re petite, these will be closer to ankle length, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Cropped jeans are great for tucking into boots and wearing with ankle boots so they work all year round.

The next day, I wore this outfit to church. The top is old (it was from Banana Republic) and the white jeans and denim jacket you’ve seen a gazillion times before, but I really like the combination of colors. I wore the same shoes and carried the same bag as the night before, and I even wore the same necklace. They were all still sitting out and it just seemed to work.

This next top has almost sold out as well, even though I just purchased it a couple weeks ago. I hate it when that happens! You can see more of this look in this post.

I can’t remember where I wore this. I was trying out my new slim boyfriend jeans. I’ve been having a hard time knowing how to style these. A more fitted top is definitely key, but I’m struggling with the shoes. I prefer a heel with boyfriend jeans, but that’s not always practical, so I went with a thong sandal. I guess it works…

It’s yet another old top! I wore this to the mall one day last week. This top was a LOFT purchase late last summer, and I love the colors and the print with a lighter wash denim. I like how the gold shoes pull out the yellow from the print in the top.

Someone wrote in and told me that they’ve just begun to realize how important the denim wash can be to an outfit so I wanted to point out how in this case, I chose a lighter wash denim to contrast against the background of the top and also to pull out the light blue from the print.

You’ll recognize this 3-disc necklace from some of the pictures above. I’ve had this necklace for a few years and I didn’t wear it much for a while, but lately it seems to go with so much. It works well in a v-neck. Layering delicate necklaces is a popular trend right now, and this way you get the look with just one necklace.

This popular circle cardigan was restocked in all colors and sizes, but it looks like the blush sold out again. I’m loving blush paired with burgundy right now, and a taupe bag and shoes is the perfect neutral finishing touch.

If you like this color, I received a pretty bell sleeve sweater from Trunk Club this week that is almost identical. It would also look good with these burgundy jeans, as well as with white or black or grey or most regular denim washes, although I like it best with lighter wash jeans.

This is a casual summer outfit I wore to a backyard barbecue last weekend. It was hot and humid and I wanted to be comfortable. This top is still available in a few colors, but the teal is gone. I love teal and white for summer and I’m trying to eek out every last drop of summer fashion while I can!

The bracelet was a last minute #NSale purchase. I had my eye on it from the beginning, and on the final day I decided to bite the bullet and order it. It’s beautiful in person. The necklace is old, but it has the same turquoise stones as the bracelet so I like wearing them together.

I wore this to church last week, and it was featured in my Fashion Friday post yesterday. Lucky Brand is STILL running BOGO 50% off mix and match tops! I also really like this poncho and this blouse. Their jewelry is BOGO 50% off too, and I’m obsessed with these earrings.

I wore this to an event at the Philadelphia Premium Outlets earlier this week. I’m wearing that same necklace and bracelet combo as I did above, and I even added coordinating earrings this time. I felt like it was a little much with the leopard flats, and typically I’d have changed to a taupe or beige shoe, but I decided to live dangerously. Haha! I know, it works, but I’m such a plain Jane.

This cold shoulder ruffle tank is yet another discontinued style; I got it at Banana Republic earlier this summer.

Amazingly, this washed eyelet top is STILL fully stocked, and I bought it months ago. It’s quite summery so I’m wearing it as much as I can. This is the type of top that I’ll put away after Labor Day. I wear white jeans all year round, but I’ll pair them with heavier fabrics and darker colors for fall.

This fall transition outfit was on the blog earlier this week, but I saved this picture for Instagram. I recommend sizing down in the sweater, but go up in the cami.

I wore this outfit to my son’s band preview performance a few nights ago. A simple t-shirt and jeans with Converse seemed like a good choice since we were going to be in the football stadium. I thought the grey sneakers paired nicely with the plum colored top.

And finally, this was just a casual outfit for running around one day this week. This is the day I twisted my ankle, so I wore my most supportive sandals.

These Abeo sandals have great support for those with finicky feet. I walked all over Disney World in these and they were great. The best part is, they don’t require any breaking-in period. They were brand new and I didn’t have a single blister or any other issues with them.

Even though we’ve been talking fall fashion since July, thanks to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, I still can’t quite believe it’s time for our fall fashion challenge. The kids start school on Monday, so I’m sure that will help make it seem more real. It’s also helpful that our weather is rather fall-like at the moment. I’m sure it will get hot again, but for now, I’m enjoying the reprieve.

I’m really happy that Nordstrom has actually restocked much of what I purchased during the #NSale, unlike last year. I’ll be styling a lot of those pieces as well as some new ones, and I’ll be sharing some transition looks too, as cooler weather is still a ways off for most of us.

Hello, friends! Cheers to the weekend! This is our last weekend before school starts so I’m hoping to make the most of it. My daughter who does cyber school actually started on Wednesday, but Monday is the first day I’ll have to get the other two kids up and out the door on time, and that’s always fun. (NOT!)

I’ve never been the mom to gradually start moving their schedules up so they’re getting up earlier to prepare for going back to school. We’re more of a rip-off-the-bandaid sort of family so it will be a rude awakening for several members of our household come Monday morning, but they’ll get used to it soon enough.

ANYWAY! Today I’ve got a fun summer look featuring this gorgeous floral neck tie blouse. I actually wore this outfit to church last Sunday.

I picked up this top when I was shopping in the Lucky Brand store last week, and they’re still running a BOGO 50% off deal on most apparel!

I played around with the neck tie and decided to loop it once and let it hang in the middle. You can tie it or let both pieces hang down as shown on the website, but this way seemed to work best for me. For size reference, I’m wearing a small, so you can probably size down if you’re in between. It fits perfectly, I just hope it doesn’t shrink at all!

Inspired by the muted color palette, I paired this top with white jeans and blush peep-toe booties.

I considered wearing my grey platform espadrille wedges, which would also look great with this outfit, and I hope to try this top with grey jeans and more casual shoes sometime as well. Wouldn’t these rose suede loafer slides be cute with that combination!?! There are so many possibilities with this pretty print.

These perforated peep-toe booties with the block heel and split shaft are great with so many outfits, and I’ve worn them a ton this summer. I’m going to be sad when it’s time to put them away for the season. As has been my experience with all my Vince Camuto boots, they’re supremely comfortable for a high heel and very easy to walk in.

My pedicure is Zoya Natty, by the way. I love this shade of blue.

These are my go-to white jeans — the Paige Verdugo ankle skinnies. I love how these fit, but I definitely recommend sizing up in these. They never seem to look worn or stretch out, and I’ve been wearing them regularly for going on two years now. I even wear them through the fall and winter. Stay tuned for styling tips and some fun looks with white jeans after Labor Day!

For a similar style at a more budget-friendly price point, check out these Penny skinnies from Liverpool Jeans Company. Here’s a look at the outfit from behind. I really like the length of this top. I find it so much more flattering than the longer, more voluminous tops that have been trending for a while.

I accessorized with a mix of gold and silver jewelry. I’ve mentioned these David Yurman bracelets before. They were both gifts from my husband and I wear them often. I don’t believe in saving designer jewelry for special occasions. They’re made to be worn and enjoyed, and that’s what I do!

And these earrings are new from the Lucky Brand store. I like them because they’re big but delicate so they don’t overwhelm my outfits but are still visible under my dark hair. They also have a combination of silver, yellow gold, and rose gold metals so they go with just about anything else I’m wearing.

With summer quickly coming to an end, this is one of the last summer outfits I’ll be posting! It’s hard to believe it, but 26 Days of Fall Fashion starts one week from today on September 1st!

Hello and welcome back to another edition of Fight the Frump! Today we’re talking about everyone’s favorite subject: bra fittings.

Haha, well anyway. It may not be the most desirable thing to talk about, but getting a proper bra fitting is probably the #1 thing you can do to fight the frump. No matter how cute your clothes are, if you’re sagging and dragging, ahem, you will look schlumpy.

How long has it been since you’ve had a professional bra fitting? Have you ever?

It is estimated that something like 80% of women are wearing the wrong size bra, and the older we get, the more of a problem it is. Our bodies change, yes, but I think we also put less of a priority on our undergarments because let’s face it, we’re not as cute and perky as we used to be, and they’re just not as much fun to shop for as they once were.

But it must be done.

And not just once. If you were fitted for a bra back before you had kids when your metabolism was still working in your favor, you’re probably not the same size anymore. As we age and our weight hems and haws, our bodies change.

Every woman should get a professional bra fitting every 5 years or with any major body change (weight loss or gain, childbirth, pregnancy, etc.)

The other issue with our bras that can affect the frump factor is the age and condition of the bras we’re wearing.

How long has it been since you replaced your bras?

Uh-huh. Thought so.

Experts say that bras we wear on a regular basis should be replaced every six months. I’ll stretch that to about a year, (haha, stretch… I’m so punny) but after that, it’s time for a new one.

In fact, I just took a break from writing this post and ordered 2 new bras because I’m due.

Again, this is not just a brilliant marketing strategy on the part of bra manufacturers. Take a look at the straps on your favorite bra — especially the band that goes around your back. Does the elastic look stretched out and worn? See that? It’s time for a new one.

Have you ever bought the same bra as one you have in your closet and compared the new with the old? These babies don’t hold up for much more than a year of regular use. Once they start to stretch out, they don’t do their job, and the next thing you know, your saggin’ and baggin’ and no one wants that!

Another bit of advice I have for you is not to wear the same bra two days in a row. Supposedly they will last longer and provide better support if they are given a break, so I try to heed that advice.

I keep track of this pretty easily because I usually toss my bra on the floor when I go to bed because I’m classy like that. Haha. Then in the morning when I go to get dressed, I intentionally pick a fresh bra out of my drawer so I’m not wearing the same bra two days in a row. When I make my bed and pick up my room, I put yesterday’s bra back in the drawer. Or at least that’s the way it’s supposed to work.

Here are some quick bra fitting tips or ways to know if your bras are the wrong size: 

• Your bra cups should be large enough to prevent breast tissue from bulging or spilling out over the neckline or armhole edges. Conversely, your bra cups are too large if they have wrinkling.
• If any breast tissue falls out from under the bottom of your cup when you raise your arms, your cup may be too small and/or your bra band may be too big.
• If your band slides up in the back with you raise your arms or bend over, your bra band may be too big.
• Ideally, the center panel between the bra cups should sit firmly against your chest. There are exceptions, but this is the goal.
• If your shoulders have dents from your straps, then you probably need a smaller band size to give your bra more support. The straps shouldn’t be doing most of the work.

So this is your task. Take an afternoon for yourself, go to the mall, ideally go to Nordstrom or Soma or a place that provides professional bra fittings, and freshen up your foundation garments with new ones in the right size that put the girls back where they’re supposed to be. Then see how much better your clothes look.

After the holidays and at the start of a new year, everyone is talking about purging, decluttering, and cleaning out, and September brings much of the same zeal for organizing and decluttering. Along with back to school season comes that same feeling of a fresh start.

People in most areas of the country will be clearing out their closets to make room for fall clothes so this is a great time to talk about purging your closet and filling it with only the things you love.

Over the past few years, I’ve worked hard to curate a wardrobe that meets my needs for almost any occasion without having an overabundance of odds and ends that I never wear. It’s still a work in progress, and I expect it always will be to some extent, but I’m so happy now when I walk into my closet. It’s a great feeling!

If you don’t love your wardrobe, and you wish you did, you can change that.

How long has it been since you gave your closet a ruthless purge?

I don’t mean just removing a few things you haven’t worn in a few seasons; I mean taking it all out and starting over with only things that you truly love. If you haven’t done this in a few years (or ever), that’s the first step.

I always thought I was good at moving things out at the end of every season and keeping my closet up to date until I read Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. That’s when I realized I was doing it all wrong.

I used to go through my drawers and closet at the end of each season and remove anything that was damaged, out of style, or didn’t fit well, but I didn’t realize how many things were getting overlooked or saved “just in case.” I still had a lot more clothes than I was actually wearing. That’s how you end up with a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear. Well, that, and by buying things that don’t fit right or don’t go with anything else in your wardrobe.

Marie Kondo’s method was revolutionary to me. She has you take everything out of your closet and drawers — every. last. thing. And then go through them one by one, trying them on if you haven’t worn them this season, and asking yourself if each piece sparks joy. If not, it goes buh-bye.

It sounds hokey, but there’s a big difference between, “Eh, it’s okay. I might want it some day” and “I love this; I want to put it on and wear it right now.”

That made all the difference for me.

Once you ruthlessly purge your closet and get rid of all the stuff you don’t wear and don’t love, you can start to rebuild your wardrobe into one you will love to wear.

If you feel like you have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear, start by purging your closet with the process below. Only the items that fit and make you happy will go back into your closet, and then you can rebuild from there. You may end up with 5 pieces or 55; the number doesn’t matter, as long as every piece is one you would love to put on and wear right now.

I recommend doing this when you have a good bit of time to spend. You don’t want to be rushed. Also, you will be trying on a lot of clothes, so I like to do this when I am fixed up and feeling good about how I look. I think it’s easier to get a good gauge of how something looks on when I have some makeup on and my hair done. Also, I don’t recommend doing this after a big meal when you’re feeling bloated. Choose a time when you feel good, you look good, and you have a few hours to dedicate to the project.

Here’s the process.

How to Ruthlessly Purge Your Closet

Step 1: Empty out your closet.

Yes. Take everything out, down to the bare walls. Do NOT skip this step. Taking everything out at once is first step to style clarity. Make sure to gather your clothing from all areas of the house — laundry, storage, etc. Don’t skip anything.

Try on anything you haven’t worn recently — yes, even that special occasion dress you’ve been saving for 5 years “just in case.” Before I did this, I had no idea how much stuff I was keeping “just in case”, and I was shocked at how many of my “just in case” pieces didn’t even fit anymore. What a waste of closet space!

Step 2: Sort each item into four piles.

• LOVE IT: If it is appropriate for the current season, and you absolutely love it and want to put it on right this second, hang it back in your closet.
• MAYBE: Is the fit a bit off? The color? Are you keeping it just because it has sentimental value, or because you paid a lot for it and feel guilty getting rid of it? Put it in a box and store it. If you find yourself wishing you had it, you can always go retrieve it. But if you don’t find yourself wanting it before the end of the season, it’s time to donate it and let someone else enjoy it. If you’re not used to purging, this can be hard to do, but I promise you, it is SO freeing!
• HATE IT: Self explanatory. Donate or sell to fund new purchases.
• SEASONAL: If it’s not in season, but you LOVE IT (and I mean LOVE IT), put it in a box and store it so you can add it to your wardrobe when the proper season rolls around.

Okay, a few notes about this step.

Marie Kondo says it is important to touch each piece and consider if it brings you joy. I promise you, this works. Trust your gut. If you don’t feel like putting it on and wearing it right now but are afraid to get rid of it, put it in the MAYBE pile. You can always go back to it, but you don’t want anything you don’t absolutely love in your LOVE IT pile.

If you have a TON of clothes, do this process in groups. All your tops, then all your bottoms, then dresses, shoes, etc.

I realize not everyone has seasonal wardrobes, and that is fine. If you prefer to keep all of your clothes in your closet all year round, go for it. But if you live in an area with distinct seasons as I do, I highly recommend putting away things that are not in season. It’s so much easier to get dressed when you’ve reduced your closet to only truly viable options. Try it once, and see how you like it.

I also realize that some people have a really hard time getting rid of things they’ve bought that they feel are still in good shape, even if they don’t fit properly or make them happy. If that is you, I say this with love: Be like Elsa, and LET IT GO. You will feel SO much better, trust me!

Yes, it feels very wasteful to give away perfectly good clothing, and some people have a hard time with the purging process, but I look at it this way. It’s not a waste if it blesses someone who needs it.

If my clothes sit in my closet and rot until they are outdated and full of moth holes, then yes. That’s a waste. However, if I can bring joy to someone today by giving them a bag of like-new clothing that they will wear and enjoy, then I’m all for it.

If you don’t personally know someone who wants your castoffs, there are tons of local organizations that do good work providing clothing to needy women and families in the community where you live. Just find one that resonates with you and haul your stuff over there. As an added bonus, get a receipt, and it’s a tax write-off.

I keep a MAYBE bin in my closet with the things I just can’t bear to part with but don’t think I will wear. I allow myself to go into the bin and retrieve something if I change my mind during the season. This helps with any feelings of remorse over getting rid of perfectly good clothing. I have gone into the MAYBE bin a few times, so I won’t tell you that you will never regret getting rid of something, but I’d rather re-purchase a couple of things than live with a closet full of clothes I never wear.

Step 3: Assess what’s left in your closet.

You may want to live with your clothes for a little while before shopping for new pieces. If you’re struggling to define your personal style, this process will help. Peruse Pinterest, your favorite blogs (ahem) and fashion magazines, and keep track of what styles resonate with you. Pin them to a personal style Pinterest board, or keep a notebook with pages from magazines. Whichever method you prefer is fine, as long as it works for you.

Your goal during this phase is to determine your personal style and what you need to round out your wardrobe. Keep a notebook or a document on your phone with a list of clothing items you need or want, and then when you go shopping, you can shop strategically.

Step 4: Shop. 

This last step is an ongoing process, unless you’re creating a capsule wardrobe, in which case you will complete this step and live with it for a season.

Shop for any items you need to complete your wardrobe. Make a list and shop intentionally. Consider your lifestyle. Make sure you have a good ratio of casual clothes to work wear. This varies from person to person and of course is based on climate as well.

Cardigans are definitely having a moment right now, and this cozy ribbed cardigan in a luxe camel color is a great piece to have in your wardrobe this year because it will go with so much. I love this color for fall.

This sweater runs quite big. I have the small and I could probably wear an extra small. It’s lightweight enough to start wearing as soon as there is a nip in the air, but it’s also cozy and will add warmth on colder days as well. It also comes in black and oatmeal.

Sizes are limited, unfortunately, but this rib stitch cardigan is another great option, and I also love this long ribbed cardigan although it doesn’t come in camel.

STYLE TIP: Push up the sleeves for a more flattering look and to give it a little extra style. Of course, when it’s cold, you can enjoy the extra long length — so cozy.

Here’s a look at the sweater from the back. Long cardigans can tend to add bulk and extra visual weight, but I find this one to be quite flattering. The drop shoulders are a fun detail as well.

My instinct was to wear a white tee or cami under this sweater, and I’m sure I’ll do that at some point, but when I saw this floral lace trim cami, I knew I wanted to incorporate it into this outfit. Fall florals are a huge trend this season, and I love the punch a bold floral print like this adds to an outfit.

If I want a fun date night look, I can wear this cami with black or white jeans on its own, but I’ll usually wear it under a sweater or blazer.

The straps on the floral cami are adjustable, which is nice. I think I had them a little too high here.

Also, I should have worn a strapless bra for this shoot; I wasn’t really planning to remove my sweater. When I got home, I actually took the straps on the cami down just a little bit and tried it on with my favorite strapless bra, and it looked great. I wish I’d taken the time to work with it a little more before our shoot. #liveandlearn

I love camel and black together so I decided to wear black jeans and my black suede crisscross slides, although I think this outfit would also be amazing with white jeans.

These shoes are super comfortable, and slides are trending right now. I’ve not always been a fan of the crisscross style, but for some reason, I really like these. This pair is another option if you prefer a simpler style. Both of these sandals have a modest 2 1/2″ heel which is perfect for daily wear.

I finished off the look with gold accessories and a black satchel.

Hello, there! Happy Monday! We had quite the busy weekend here at Casa de Shane, and for the second week in a row I was unable to get a Coffee Talk post written.

Thanks to those of you who checked in on me. I’m fine, just trying to fit it all in and sometimes something has to give. Lately it’s been Coffee Talk. I was able to fit in a run and a photo shoot before church, but that leaves time for little else.

For today, I put together a roundup of fall shoes under $150 for your outfit inspiration as you transition your wardrobe from summer to fall. When it’s still too hot outside for cozy sweaters, simply swapping out your shoes can make a summer outfit more fall-appropriate, and it’s a fun way to give new life to an old outfit.

Not only am I sharing my 5 favorite pieces of jewelry, but I’m also going to talk about my 5 favorite fall 2017 jewelry trends AND my 5 favorite places to shop for jewelry. I’m also going to touch on jewelry organization.

Yes, I realize this could be at least 3 separate blog posts, but today I’m going to subscribe to the motto, Go big or go home!

I’ve had a lot of requests for more information on jewelry, how to style it, how to layer it, what to wear it with, etc. so I hope this is helpful.

5 Favorite Pieces of Jewelry

#1. layering bangles 

Bangles are nice because you can wear one or two for a more casual look or pile them on when you want more bling. You can certainly layer stretch bracelets and link bracelets and other styles, but bangles are the easiest (in my opinion.) They’re also easy to find at any price point.

I almost always wear a bracelet or a stack of bangles, but when I’m styling an outfit, I rarely choose my bracelets first. I usually decide which earrings/necklace combination is going to work best with the neckline of my top and the rest of my outfit, taking into consideration the color of the hardware on my shoes and/or handbag, and then I select my bracelets last.

Even though I have quite a few bracelets to choose from, I usually end up wearing the same two or three over and over. Isn’t that always the way!?!

When I’m wearing gold earrings/necklace, nine times out of ten, I’ll grab a stack of gold Alex and Ani charm bangles and go. I like the casual vibe and they seem to go with everything. When I’m wearing silver, I almost always wear my David Yurman link bracelet. It was a gift from my husband over 10 years ago and I still wear it several times a week. (It’s not a bangle, but I mention it because it’s definitely a favorite.)

I get a lot of requests to share my jewelry organization. I like to keep my jewelry out where I can see it so I have two bracelet stands on my dresser. Here are some similar options.

#2. long pendant necklaces

Long pendants are great for wearing over a plain shirt or top when you want to break up the solid color and draw the eye in towards the waist. You can wear a long pendant alone or layer it with one or two (or more) other shorter necklaces for more interest.

You’ll often see me wearing my gold Moon & Lola Dalton initial pendant or a silver initial charm pendant (which has unfortunately sold out.) Both are casual enough for everyday and substantial enough to be seen without being overwhelming.

Sometimes I like a pendant that is larger and makes more of a statement, usually when I’m wearing a plainer top and/or going for a dressier look. One of my current favorites is this Stella & Dot Dalilah pendant.

I keep my shorter pendants on a stand on my dresser, and I hang my long pendants on the wall with a piece I found on Amazon a few years ago. Here are some suggestions for necklace storage.

#3. large earring studs

While statement earrings are a huge trend right now, my favorites are still a simple pair of studs or mid-size drop earrings (see #4.)

I love these oversized pearl studs that I’ve featured often over the past year or so since I discovered them. They’re kind of weird because they’re two-sided, and I have to wear them backwards so the larger pearl is visible in front. I also have diamond studs that I wear a lot.

I think the reason I like studs so much is that they’re easy to pair with necklaces. I don’t like my jewelry to be too matchy-matchy so deciding which earrings and necklace to wear together is always a bit of a challenge. This is definitely the area I struggle with the most when putting outfits together.

Typically I choose my necklace first, based on my outfit and the type of top and neckline I’m wearing. Then I choose my earrings to support the necklace. My general rule of thumb goes like this: The bigger and bolder the necklace(s), the smaller and more subtle the earrings I pair with it. Studs and hoops are also good for wearing with bolder necklaces because they’re plain and work with a lot of styles of necklaces.

I keep my studs in a jewelry chest on my dresser. I also have a little trinket tray that sits in front of it where I often drop my most commonly worn earring studs and other small earrings and rings when I take them off for the night.

#4. drop earrings

I have quite a few pairs of drop earrings of various sizes and levels of formality. I would say they’re the type of earrings I wear the most. Again, depending on my necklace, I will choose drop earrings that are larger and bolder or smaller and more subtle, so I like to have a variety.

Current favorites are these filligree drop earrings and these pearl and gold chandeliers for everyday outfits, these gold lace chandeliers for dressier looks, and these two-tone beaded drop earrings for more casual days.

If I want to wear a pair of big statement earrings, I usually forego a necklace altogether or I wear something delicate that doesn’t compete.

I’m definitely a less-is-more kind of gal when it comes to jewelry. If I feel like I may possibly be overdoing it, I remove something. This isn’t necessarily the conventional wisdom of our day. Right now, there’s a lot of layering and mixing and matching going on, but I’d rather downplay my accessories so they don’t take over.

I store my drop earrings on a rotating earring holder on my dresser top. Here are some other options.

#5. fashion rings

In addition to my wedding rings, I always wear a fashion ring on my right hand. These days I usually wear the gold and silver link ring my husband gave me for Christmas last year because it goes with everything. I have others, and I really should rotate them more, but I usually revert back to this one because it’s a nice size and it has both gold and silver in it so it goes with everything.

Of course you don’t have to spend that much. Stella & Dot has a lot of pretty fashion rings under $100, as does Nordstrom and many other retailers. This crossover ring is a popular style that looks good with everything, and single stone rings are fun too. Wearing several rings on one hand or even on one finger is popular these days, but I generally stick with one. #plainJane

I store my rings in that wooden jewelry box on my dresser. It has a drawer with the padded ring holders.

Okay, so let’s move on to jewelry trends that are hot right now!

2017 Jewelry Trends

#1. statement earrings

While I tend to go for more subtle earring styles, statement earrings are definitely trending right now, so definitely partake if you like them. I think they look better on women with thicker, bigger hair than mine. I’m more likely to wear bolder earrings when I have my hair curled.

#2. tassels & pom poms

Speaking of statement earrings, tassels and pom poms are huge trends in earrings as well as necklaces and even bracelets.

#3. layering

As I mentioned above, layering is huge right now. Instead of a statement necklace, try layering several delicate necklaces of different lengths. You can also layer rings, bracelets, and even earrings.

If layering intimidates you, buy pieces that are already layered, like this Treasure & Bond bracelet set at Nordstrom or this Lucky Brand layer necklace (pictured above.) As an added bonus, many layer necklaces allow you to remove some of the pieces to give you several looks in one and more bang for your buck!

#4. mixing metals

No longer do you have to wear only gold or only silver. You can mix it all up if you want, but I usually only mix my metals when I’m wearing at least one piece of jewelry that has both colors in it. I am a huge fan of a mixed metal watch, and I also have some other pieces of jewelry that mix gold and silver and sometimes even rose gold. And that’s the perfect segue…

#5. rose gold

Rose gold is more popular than ever this year, especially mixed with yellow gold and silver. I prefer to buy pieces that incorporate the rose gold with other metal colors so I don’t have to worry about wearing rose gold in the other jewelry I’m wearing with it. Yesterday I picked up this necklace at the Lucky Brand store. It’s a good example of mixing all 3 colors of metal in a subtle way.

And finally…

#1. Stella & Dot // I’m still a Stella & Dot stylist although I haven’t been buying as much of their jewelry lately. They’re priced a little high for fashion jewelry, but they make a great product and stay on top of current trends.

#2. Nordstrom // Tons of options at all price points, great return policy, need I say more??

#3. Lucky Brand // I’m a huge fan of Lucky Brand jewelry, both for the style and price point. They have a lot to choose from, and it always holds up well for me. The aesthetic is laid back and fun, casual but still somewhat classic.

#4. J.Crew // I’ve started paying more attention to the jewelry at J.Crew lately. It’s a little more preppy/dressy than Lucky Brand, and they have a lot of nice statement pieces when you’re looking for something like that. J.Crew Factory is always worth a look as well.

#5. LOFT // LOFT does a good job with on trend jewelry at a modest price point, especially when you get it on sale.

We’re back with another Fight the Frump post and this time it’s all about shoes.

Beyond wearing the wrong bra (more on that to come in my next Fight the Frump post) I think frumpy shoes are probably the biggest area where women make fashion choices that can age us unnecessarily.

This is partly because we tend to get stuck in an era and never move out of it. The trends that were popular during that era are going to look out of style and frumpy as time marches on. This is true for many aspects of fashion — hair styles, glasses, makeup, and most definitely shoes.

The other reason shoes are such a big issue as we age is our feet tend to get more finicky and we can’t wear all the flimsy shoes and high heels that are more flattering and stylish.

Even though I’m not there yet, I had a series of foot injuries a few years ago that relegated me to “comfort shoes” for quite some time. For a girl who loves her high heels and strappy sandals, it was downright depressing. It was also a great learning experience because I had to figure out what made a shoe frumpy (or not) and seek out the best of what was available in the realm of comfort shoes. (I’m also much more grateful for the ability to wear pretty much any style of shoe I want! It’s amazing what we take for granted until it’s taken away.)

Whether you need to wear comfort shoes or not, if you’re trying to fight the frump and keep your style current, assessing your shoe wardrobe is a good place to start.

Footwear Mistakes You May Be Making

Here are some common footwear mistakes women make and how to fix them:

#1. Wearing shoes that are too clunky.

I hesitate to post a “wear this, not that” type of graphic because no matter what I pick, I’m sure to be insulting someone’s shoes, lol. And as with most matters of fashion, it’s relative. Shoes that I wouldn’t be caught dead in might be a good choice for an older woman or someone with a different style aesthetic. But here’s one quick example that I think illustrates my point. These are both “comfort sandals” by the same brand, and they both serve generally the same purpose, but the one on the left looks more youthful and flattering because it shows more of the foot and has a more flattering vamp (that’s the material on the top of the shoe). Also the cork footbed is lighter and more on trend.

Generally speaking, shoes that are clunky are never going to be as flattering as something more strappy and delicate. Of course, sometimes shoes are purposefully designed to be chunky. In that case, you have to be very selective about what you wear them with so they look intentional and not like a fashion faux pas. But when it comes to fighting the frump, going with a more delicate shoe option is usually a good choice.

#2. Wearing shoes that are out of style. 

This should go without saying, but shoes can really date your look, which is always going to equal frumpy. I’m certainly not suggesting you replace all your shoes every season or follow every trend that comes down the pike, but keeping an eye on current trends and knowing what is in and out of style is important if you’re going to keep the frump-monster at bay.

I recommend going through your closet at least once a year (I do it with each change of season) and performing a ruthless wardrobe audit. Take all your shoes out of your closet and go through each pair and ask yourself these questions:

• are they in good condition? (If not, donate or find a good shoe repair shop.)
• do they fit my current lifestyle?
• are they comfortable?
• do they make me feel good when I wear them? do I love them and want to put them on right now?
• are they still in style? (If you’re not sure, ask a friend you trust.)

With each pair of shoes, if the answer to any of those questions is no, it’s probably time to part with them. If they’re still in good shape, donate them. Otherwise, there are places that recycle old shoes. I did a quick google search and found plenty, but you may want to do your research and make sure you’re donating to a cause you feel good about supporting.

#3. Matching your shoes to your hemline.

This isn’t a no-no, but it’s not necessary, and it can make your overall look dated if you try to match your shoes to your hem too often. Try a contrasting shoe instead for a more modern look.

There is nothing wrong with the black pumps and the black dress, but the nude strappy sandals are more modern and of the moment. And I would recommend also experimenting with metallic or a bold color when wearing a black dress — or even a colored dress.

P.S. It is also not necessary to match your shoes to your handbag.

#4. Wearing hose with sandals or peep-toe shoes. 

No, just no.

I understand wanting to wear hose for certain occasions (I’m not against hose per se) but they should not be worn with sandals or open toe shoes. (I have an entire post on what hose to wear with a cocktail dress if you’re interested.)

#5. Wearing shoes that don’t flatter you. 

Most of us realize that we need to wear clothes that flatter our bodies to look and feel our best, and the same goes for shoes. Part of fighting the frump is learning what looks good on you and what doesn’t, and wearing what flatters you.

Women with skinny ankles and calves may look off-balance in a chunky platform sandal. Women with bigger calves and ankles should generally avoid shoes with a delicate ankle strap. If you have short legs, you probably want to wear shoes with a lower vamp, especially with pants and longer skirts. (Imogen Lamport has a great article on shoe vamp, if you’re interested in learning more.)

#6. Wearing shoes that are worn down. 

If your shoes are still in style and you like them, a cobbler can replace a heel or repair scratches and stains. Wearing shoes that look beat up or with a heel that is worn down will make you look sloppy and thus more frumpy.

Going along with that, make sure to take good care of your shoes. I cringe when I hear people say their shoes are in a heap on their closet floor. I have mine on shelves, and I keep some of my nicer ones that I don’t wear as often in their boxes. I have a pair of Stuart Weitzman suede pumps that I’ve had for almost 15 years and they still look like new because I keep them in their box with a little suede brush that I use on them every time I put them away. Doing this keeps them from gathering dust and and from getting marked up rubbing against other shoes in my closet over the years.

I don’t do that with all my shoes, of course, but with my really nice ones. I also take my boots to the shoe repair shop at the end of every season to have them cleaned up, and then I store them in their original boxes for the summer so they don’t gather dust.

Keeping your shoes in good shape protects your investment and helps you fight the frump.

#7. Wearing shoes that don’t fit. 

If shoes are too big or too small, that’s going to add to the frump factor. I have very squared-off toes, and there are some sandals I simply cannot wear because the footbed is too pointy and my toes will flop over the edge. This also happens when sandals are too big for my narrow feet — my feet slide too far to the front and my toes go off the end. NO NO NO. That is always a bad look. The same goes for stuffing one’s feet into shoes that are too small. It just doesn’t look good. Make sure to buy and wear shoes that fit your feet properly.

#8. Wearing the wrong shoe for the occasion. 

Running sneakers are great, but they belong in the gym or at the very least in a very casual environment with a trendy athleisure look. For the love of all that’s fashionable, please don’t wear athletic sneakers with khaki capri pants. (Try Converse or Superga if you want the comfort of a sneaker.)

Plastic flip flops are awesome for the beach, but they’re not the best choice with a sundress for church – at least not once you’re out of middle school.

Wearing shoes that are too casual for the occasion will definitely add to the frump factor, so unless you’re required to wear sneakers for medical reasons, try to match the style and formality of your shoes to the occasion.

#9. Wearing shoes that don’t work with your pants (or skirt/dress/shorts/etc.)

Sometimes you can have a great pair of shoes but they just don’t work with the length or style of your skirt or pants, and this can make you look frumpy. It takes some practice, and this is where Pinterest and fashion blogs can come in handy, but learning what style of shoe works with the various pants/skirts/dresses in your closet is a large part of fighting the frump and keeping your look current.

Y’all, this one’s a doozie. I know, I say that a lot, but really. GRAB A LARGE CUP OF COFFEE. This one’s a Venti edition.

This post is heavy on jeans and shoes, but there’s a little bit of everything because I’ve been ordering a mish-mosh of stuff.

After writing a post on 2017 fall fashion trends, I decided I should try some of them so I placed an order for cropped straight jeans and slides/mules. The next day, my Trunk Club stylist reached out and said she had a few pairs of awesome booties she wanted to send me, and I told her I was also open to trying some of the new fall denim trends. All of my boxes arrived at once, so I did a huge try-on sesh here at home and took pictures. A lot of this is going back, but I think it’s fun to share what came and what made the cut and why.

I prefer to do these pictures when I’m fixed up, but this was one of those days that I didn’t do a thing to my personal appearance — glasses, no makeup, bedhead… I had it all going on, so that’s why I cut my head out of all these pictures. #vanityvanityallisvanity

With that disclaimer, let’s get started!

As I mentioned yesterday, I placed a Lucky Brand order with several tops, and this peasant top was one of them. I like this top better in these pictures than I did in person. I actually really like it with these jeans and slides. (More on the slides in a sec.) It’s cute, and the colors are great for fall days that are still too warm for sweaters. I’m just not sure about the neckline on me. I was planning to send it back, but now I’m debating…

I’ve already worn this embroidered tank a couple of times, and I styled it with white jeans for yesterday’s blog post. Here you can see how nice it looks with blue jeans as well. I love the colors, the pretty embroidered print, and the fit is pretty good. I’d love to have it nipped in a bit at the waist, but I doubt I’ll get around to it. The length works well for me, and the notched neckline is flattering without being revealing. I just wish those dark blue “arrows” weren’t pointing right to the girls. LOL!!

I discovered these slides on Pinterest and I ordered both blush and black because I wasn’t sure which I would wear more. They’re incredibly comfortable and easy to walk in, and they stay on my feet, which is hard to find!

I recommend sizing down a half size. I ordered an 8 and sent them back for a 7.5, which fits better. I hate it when slides are too big and there’s room behind the heel. I feel like it looks like I’m playing dress-up with my mom’s shoes.

After trying on both the blush and black (and polling my Facebook page) I decided to keep the black (although I do love the blush with this outfit!) I think I’ll wear the black more with fall rapidly approaching, and I didn’t want to keep both because I also ordered a pair of chestnut slides. LOL!

These next slides are by Vince. Not Vince Camuto, just Vince. It’s a different brand, and a little on the higher end of the spectrum. I have one Vince sweater that came in a Trunk Club last winter that I wore practically to death. I can’t wait to get it out again. This brand is spendy but high quality and worth it if you know you will wear something a lot and/or for many years.

I include these in my August Favorites post because I’m already obsessed and I haven’t even started wearing them yet. They’re rather basic at first glance, but the materials are gorgeous, the color is great for fall, and the heel has a subtle flat back which is a fun subtle detail.

I have the 8 in these, and that fits perfectly so I’d say they’re TTS (true to size.) They come in this cedar color as well as black, blush, and navy. I scored them for 60% off at Bloomingdale’s, but that sale has ended and the lowest I can find them for now is 40% off at Nordstrom.

Vince Rachelle slides at Nordstrom or Zappo’s

This is a sweater I ordered on one of the last days of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, and it took a while to come in. I like the open weave, the shape and size of the V-neckline, and the subtle bell sleeves. Its also a nice length (not too long, yay!) and has some shape through the waist. I ordered a medium because it’s a juniors brand, but I wish I’d ordered the small. I’m considering an exchange.

O’Niell Hillary sweater // AG legging jeans // mules

Here’s a close-up of the mules I’m wearing above. You may remember that I ordered these after striking out with the Halogen slide loafers and then discovering the pricey AGLs.

I had high hopes for these, but they aren’t very comfortable. I don’t think I could walk far in them. And while I sort of like how they look in these pictures, I feel ridiculous wearing them in person. I keep thinking about those AGLs because they were so incredibly comfortable and the quality is fantastic, but I prefer the more modern minimalistic style so I think I’ll keep looking.

I also ordered two pairs of crop straight jeans. I wanted to try to find something at a more budget-friendly price point than what I usually purchase because I’m not sure I’ll wear them much and I know you guys like to see a variety of price points. It worked out well because my Trunk Club stylist sent me premium denim so I have some of both to show you.

These are by Treasure & Bond. They have a higher waist and a slouchy-slim silhouette with ripped knees, split hems, and redone back pockets. They’re fun and somewhat flattering, I guess, but I don’t like the wash at all. To be frank, I think they look cheap.

These next ones are Kut from the Kloth and they’re fairly comfortable and fit well, but they have this funky fringe thing going on with the waistband that I didn’t notice when I placed my order. Needless to say, they’re going back.

The next few pairs came from Trunk Club. These are Paige, and they’re a high waist ankle straight style. For some reason, the ankle straight and crop straight jeans always look bootcut to me. I can’t say I love these. I just feel like they chop off my leg at an awkward spot, but maybe my eye will adjust after I see more people wearing them.

This pair of Paige jeans was way too small. Even though she sent me 5 pairs of jeans in the same size (29) the fit was all over the map. These wouldn’t even come close to buttoning so I tried to get a picture below that area, lol.

These are a high waist crop straight style, so they’re an inch shorter than the ones directly above. These also have the displaced pockets that are trending right now. I didn’t even notice because I was so confounded by the crazy sizing, but you can see them on the website if you’re curious.

These are Citizens, and they’re a high rise slim boyfriend style. I should have flipped up the cuffs, but they didn’t come that way out of the box so I didn’t think about it at the time. These have some mild distressing and fading to give them a lived-in look, and they are pretty much ankle length (as opposed to cropped) for leg-lengthening fit. I don’t love them on me, but I can see how they might be cute on someone else.

These are also Citizens in a slim boyfriend style, but they have more of a mid-rise and they’re an inch shorter than the ones above. I like the medium wash with the whiskering and hand sanding details, but I don’t care for how they fit me. I just feel schlumpy in them. I also think they were a size too big.

Now this pair I kind of like. Like the ones directly above, they’re the Emerson Slim Boyfriend Jeans by Citizens but in a lighter wash. I don’t know why these fit better, but I think they do.

To be sure, I tried to get a shot of my rear view. I didn’t bother taking this shot with the other styles although it would be helpful to compare. The rear shots are always hard to take. As you can see, this one is blurry, but I think these look alright from behind. (That is a tag on that left pocket, not part of the denim.)

I’ve been wanting to add some different styles to my closet, and I have some Trunk Club credits so I decided to keep these. I don’t think I’m ever going to like this style on me as much as skinny jeans or even bootcut jeans because the boyfriend style is wider through the thighs, and I think I look better in jeans that fit more snug through the thighs. However, for a boyfriend jean, these are the most flattering I’ve found, and I think they’ll be fun to style this summer and fall.

I actually wore them yesterday with an embellished muscle shirt and thong sandals. You can see that look on my Instagram.

Overall, I think I like slim boyfriend style better than the ankle straight and crop straight because they have a slight taper and follow the line of the leg. That said, with the taller shaft booties coming in fashion and the slide loafers and mules, I can see how the straighter styles will work with those. I guess I need more time for my eye to adjust before embracing that trend.

And that’s the perfect segue. Let’s move on to ankle boots!

I’m noticing a distinct shift in trends this fall. More chunky boots are definitely trending, a higher shaft is coming back, and I’m also seeing a lot of black in both ankle boots and the loafer slides. My stylist sent me 3 pairs of black booties and one pair in a dusty rose.

I was immediately drawn to this pair of Jeffrey Campbell block heel booties with the higher shaft. The description on the Nordstrom website explains exactly what is going on with ankle boots this season:

Jeffrey Campbell makes a subtle nod to this season’s play on scale and balance in an inset bootie profiled with sock-like snugness around the shaft and a high vamp and counter that emphasize its slender verticality. The stacked block heel flares slightly at the top to provide a chunky contrast without looking heavy, for a silhouette that’s fashionably inspired and eminently wearable.

I should have shown them with different pants so you can appreciate all the details. I really like the contrast of the wood heel with the black booties. It’s going to take me a while to get used to this new style with the sock-like shaft and figure out how to style them, though.

This next pair is the BP. brand, and they have a cool flared block heel with double layer goring for easy on/easy off. They’re comfortable and fairly flattering if you like the blockier style. I’m kind of digging that flared heel.

Finally, these Steve Madden tie back booties are my favorites because they have that same sock-like shaft but overall they’re more delicate and flattering to wear. I can see these with dresses this fall as well as jeans and pants. They remind me a lot of a Stuart Weitzman style that was big last year. They’re made of a stretchy micro-suede, and they’re very comfortable for a 4″ heel. These are definitely keepers.

They also come in a dusty rose, which she sent but I didn’t try on. I guess I should have because they’re fun and different, but they looked cheap to me. For some reason the black look higher quality.

This is why I love Trunk Club. I wouldn’t have known about those styles or even necessarily been drawn to them, but my stylist reached out and told me about them and offered to send me some to try.

So before we wrap this up, I have a couple of ponchos to show you. I ordered both of these from Lucky Brand, and I used this opportunity to try on two pairs of boots I ordered from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale that I’m still trying to decide about.

This heather grey poncho is one size fits all, and I like it a lot. The arm holes are small enough that it can be worn without an under layer as shown here, or I can wear a long-sleeve t-shirt underneath when the weather gets colder. It has a nice length, and it’s not too terribly voluminous. FYI, it also comes in navy.

I tried it on first with legging jeans and the Stuart Weitzman OTK boots from the #NSale. Yes, they are stupid expensive, but they were 40% off when I bought them. These boots are incredibly gorgeous, and I’ve been hankering for a pair for a while but I can never seem to pull the trigger. I got a similar pair in a Trunk Club last winter, and after hemming and hawing for a few days, I sent them back.

I’m tempted to keep them this time, considering the sale price, but I’m just not sure I’ll get enough wear out of them. They’re kind of over the top for my casual life here in the suburbs.

In addition to being gorgeous boots, they’re comfortable as well as warm. I like this chunky 2″ heel better than the flat Lowland style or the popular high heel styles.

The other pair I’m debating about are these Blondo tall boots. They’re gone from the Nordstrom website, but these are similar. I had a similar pair to these that I’ve worn a ton the past two winters, but last year one got ruined. I was so upset b/c they’re so practical for our messy Pennsylvania winters and I like the uptown style.

When I saw these on a really good discount during the #NSale, I ordered them, even though it pains me to pay to replace boots that I already have. I guess that’s why I’m still undecided. I think I’d rather have something different even though I like them.

These are slightly taller than the ones I had, but they’re super comfortable with a memory foam footbed, and they look good on. They’re also waterproof, which is awesome.

Okay, last piece and I’m done. PINKY PROMISE! Actually, this is two but I’m wearing them together.

This open front fringe poncho is super duper soft, and I love the drape and the fringe detail. I feel like the open front is more flattering than the pullover style like the one above. This sweater comes in black as well as the mink color I’m wearing here, and I ordered the XS/S for reference. I like the fit so I would say to size down if you’re in doubt at all.

The long sleeve tee I’m wearing underneath is another #NSale purchase. It’s a great wardrobe basic and comes in a ton of colors and some stripes as well.

I’ve definitely got some decisions to make. I thought I knew what I was keeping and returning, but after looking through these pictures, I’m conflicted on a few things. I didn’t get around to doing my returns over the weekend so that’s still on my to-do list this week.

I wore it with blue jeans and beige suede lace-up flats to meet my husband for lunch one day last week, and I styled it here with white jeans and espadrilles for a dressier look. This outfit will look great with a denim jacket when the weather gets cooler.

I decided to go with silver accessories since the color palette is rather cool and my neutral shoes have cool undertones and a silver buckle. I don’t always worry about matching the hardware on my shoes, but it worked out with this outfit.

I didn’t bother with a necklace since the top is so busy and the neckline isn’t very wide. Instead, I wore medium-size silver drop earrings and layered two of my favorite bracelets.

My crossbody bag is from the #NSale last year, and I’m so glad they brought it back this year and it’s still in stock. I carry it a lot. It’s a great size, and the french grey color goes with so much.

Even though it’s a gorgeous bag, I think the full retail price is high for what it is. Hopefully it will go on sale later in the season; it did last year. I will definitely let you know if/when that happens!

These shoes are old favorite as well. If you’ve followed my blog for long, you know I have a major weakness for this brand. Not only are the materials and workmanship top quality, but they’re incredibly comfortable as well. I had another pair of his espadrilles that I wore for 10 years, so last year I decided to replace them with these.

I have the dove grey, and they also came in white and adobe. They’re available this season in limited sizes at 6pm.com and Nordstrom Rack, but I’ll link to some other neutral wedge sandals that I recommend in the shopping widget at the end of this post.

I love the embroidered detail on this tank along with the scalloped hemline, and the colors are so pretty. The straps are wide enough to wear a regular bra, which is always a bonus.

The back is a solid sage in a soft cotton and it has a pretty gathered detail between the shoulders. I wish we’d thought to take a photo from behind, but you can see it if you click through to the website.

For size reference, I have the small. I often wear medium in Lucky Brand tops, but I was able to size down in this one.

The nice thing about a patterned top like this is it’s easy to put an outfit together around it. The top is the hero piece, and the rest of the outfit just has to support it without competing with it. Pair it with a solid bottom, add neutral shoes and bag, and finish off the look with a few simple accessories. Easy!

Happy Monday, friends! The countdown is on. My kids go back to school in just two weeks, and the next thing we know it will be Labor Day and time for fall fashion.

As I’m starting to think about wrapping up my summer content, I put together my August Favorites for today.

August Favorites

#1. Caslon shirttail hem tank dress // This is a great little summer dress with sandals or fashion sneakers, but it will also be a piece I can wear into fall with ankle boots and a denim jacket. I actually styled it 3 ways in this post a few weeks ago.

#2. Kendra Scott filigree drop earrings // I picked up these earrings on the #NSale, and I liked them so much I got both gold and silver. I find myself wearing them a lot. They’re just big enough to make a statement without being overwhelming, and I like the delicate filigree pattern.

#3. Lucky Brand embroidered shell // I picked this up at Lucky Brand and I’ve already worn it a couple of times. It’s got a gorgeous color palette, and it’s another piece I can easily transition to fall as the weather gets cooler. I’m planning to style it for a post later this week.

#4. Maui Jim sunnies // I shared these in my latest Maui Jim sponsored post, but I wanted to also include them here because I’ve been wearing them so much. I really like the tortoise cat eye frames. Sunglasses are a quick and easy way to update your look, and the best thing is, they always fit no matter if your weight fluctuates or not. Haha!

#5. Lieth suede tassel clutch // This was another #NSale purchase, although I actually have it in yellow, but that color sold out. I also love the grey. It’s the perfect neutral for fall and winter.

#6. Vince slides // It took me a while, but I’m finally getting on the mule/slide bandwagon. I spotted these on the Nordstrom website, and I loved the simplicity and the quality. I ordered them when they were 60% off at Bloomingdale’s, but just this morning I see the price has gone back up. Boo. They’re comfortable and on trend, and I love this color for fall.

I’ve been wearing more of my older clothes lately so I won’t have links for everything I’m sharing today. I decided that I’ve gotten too caught up in trying to always wear something I can link to, and that gets tiring plus it’s just not realistic. I realize no one expects me to wear new clothes all the time, so I hope you won’t mind that I can’t link to everything.

This first outfit is case in point. This split neck top sold out soon after I bought it, but I wear it a lot. I like that I can throw it on with jeans or shorts and it’s the perfect length without futzing with a front-tuck. At first I put on my sand patent Miller sandals out of habit, but then I switched to these pink Gigi flats because I wanted the pop of color. I love grey and pink together.

This was on the way to the beach when we were at Ocean City, NJ a few weeks ago.

I wore this to the boardwalk one night when we were at the beach. I wanted something simple but cute and put together. This is a great little tank — soft but thick enough to not be see through, flattering but modest straps and neckline, and the perfect length. (It is TTS or you can size down if in between.)

I’ve worn this dress a few times since I got it. It’s so easy to throw on and go. For size reference, I have the small so it’s TTS or maybe runs a tad big. Size down if in doubt.

Some of you ask about necklaces. In this case, I wore two — one to fill in the open neckline and the other to break up the front of the dress. Both are shiny gold and they work well together.

Our last morning at the beach, I asked my husband to take a quick picture. This is pretty much what I wore every morning before going down to the beach and every night after we got back from dinner. So comfy. On chillier mornings, I threw my thermal cardigan on top.

I wear a variation on this outfit for all of my strength training workouts. This tee is old (from Kohl’s) but it’s a favorite, and these are my all-time favorite running/workout shorts. I have them in 3 colors. When it gets colder, I wear these and throw a sweatshirt on over my tank top to go to and from the gym.

I’m loving my new pajamas. I picked up a couple pairs when the Gap was having 40% off a few weeks ago. This is my favorite spot to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee — on my front porch in one of our wicker chairs.

I wore this next outfit to go to dinner with some girlfriends one night last week. I used the opportunity to pull out one of my off-the-shoulder tops because I rarely have the occasion to wear them. I also pulled out my all-time favorite wedge sandals.

Normally I’d wear white jeans with this, but it was a Monday night and I didn’t want to look too over-the-top and I wasn’t sure how everyone else was dressing. SO! I wore blue jeans to tone it all down some, but then I added the fringe clutch and tassel earrings to keep it fun. LOL! #overthinker

I ordered this cute tie front sweatshirt from Gap on sale last week. It will make a nice transition top this fall. For size reference, this is the small. If you’re in between sizes, you can probably size down in this.

I paired it with straight crop jeans because I was going for a pedicure and they’re easy to roll up, plus the two pieces work well together. I also like the contrast of the moss green bag with the ivory top. I wore a long, rather casual charm pendant necklace from American Eagle and Alex and Ani bangles. I wish I could find a similar necklace to link to. I like this one a lot with casual outfits.

I wore this for a mall run and other assorted errands. I love how this top pairs with white jeans, and I also like it with blue jeans for a more casual look.

My husband and I celebrated our 22nd anniversary last weekend, and this is what I wore to go out to dinner on Saturday night. I paired this cute printed top from White House Black Market (another top from last year, sorry!) with dark blue jeans, and then I wore white pumps to dress it up.

I was going to wear my white blazer, but I felt too businessy so I switched to my white denim jacket instead. I added a layered necklace with some turquoise in it (also old) and big gold hoops. Then a couple gold bangles and a metallic clutch finished off the outfit.

I wore this outfit to church last Sunday. Our church is very casual, especially in the summertime. Anything goes, really, and I can dress up when I want to, but I still wasn’t feeling well so I decided to go for comfort.

This grey tee was a splurge last summer and I plan to have it in my closet for many years. It’s got a great fit to it and it’s a beautiful fabric. I always love grey and pink together, and these pink jeans are super stretchy and comfortable, so they seemed like a good idea. I added my embellished gladiators and a coordinating grey crossbody. Silver jewelry completes the look.

Monday was cold and rainy, and I had to drive my daughter to and from camp so I threw on comfy jeans, rain boots, and my rust tie front top for some color on a drap day. My raincoat is several years old, and this charm pendant has sold out. My Hunter boots are 40% off, by the way! They run very big so definitely size down. I wore a sweater over this when I was at home. What on earth happened to summer!?!

This linen sheath is still available in several sizes, and it’s a great price for the quality. It also comes in black. It runs true to size for Eliza J – I always wear an 8 in her dresses, and sometimes I can wear a 6 in other brands.

You may notice, I didn’t match my handbag to my shoes, but they’re both light neutrals that work into the colors of the outfit.

Here are some common mistakes women make with their jeans that can keep them looking frumpy.

5 Denim Mistakes You May Be Making

(Note: my pictures are supposed to be examples of denim done right, not the mistakes I’m talking about… in case you’re wondering, lol.)

#1. Wearing jeans that are too big or too small.

This is probably the biggest mistake women make with denim. If your jeans are too big, they will sag and bag and look schlumpy. If your jeans are too small, they will create unsightly bulges that add visual weight.

As with any wardrobe item, but especially with jeans, it is super important to dress for your current size, not the size you want to be. Most women fluctuate some with their weight; I know I do. Many of us probably keep a couple of sizes in our closets. When I gain or lose more than 5 pounds, I move the jeans that are too big or too small to the back and make sure the ones that fit best are up front where they’re easy to see and grab. I don’t toss the other ones, though, because sometimes I find that I need them a few months down the road.

If you’re unsure if a new pair of jeans is the right fit, wear them around the house for a couple hours before taking the tags off and see how they look after they have some time to stretch out a bit (or to see if they will stretch out.)

Some jeans stretch out a whole size after the first hour of wear, and others never really stretch out so the only way to find out is to wear them for a while. Almost all jeans give a little, so the general rule of thumb is, if in doubt, size down. When I am getting the help of a sales associate, they almost always advise me to go with the smaller size.

#2. Ignoring the rear view.

I used to hate my rear view in jeans, and I figured it was just my shape. Then I found the brands that work for me, and here I am posting tushy shots all over the internet. Haha!

But really, different brands fit differently, and we all have different shapes, so you just have to try a bunch until you find the ones that work best for you.

I’ve heard women say, Who cares, I can’t see it. Well, that doesn’t mean no one else can, LOL!!! Let’s face it, people are seeing us from behind probably as much as they’re seeing us from the front, so be sure to check your rear view — particularly the pocket placement.

I personally prefer smaller pockets that aren’t set too far apart, but if you have a different shape, you might find bigger pockets work best for you. Definitely avoid pockets that sit too low or too high. Try on different styles and take pictures of the rear or have a sales associate or trusted friend guide you on what looks best. Once you figure out what styles and brands work best for you, it’s fairly easy to shop for jeans from there on out.

#3. Not hemming your jeans.

When jeans are dragging on the floor, it definitely detracts from the overall appearance and creates a sloppy look, especially as we get older. But then again, if jeans are too short, they will cut off the leg at an awkward spot and look frumpy, so you definitely need to find your sweet spot with length and then hem your jeans if necessary.

With crop and ankle length jeans, this isn’t QUITE as much of an issue as it is with straight and bootcut styles, but it’s still something to consider. Even ankle length jeans can look awkward if they are too long or too short.

FIT TIP: In general, skinny jeans should come to the top of the ankle, straight-leg jeans to the mid-point of the ankle, and boot-cut jeans to a half-inch off the ground.

I know, so many factors! But as they say, the devil is in the details (and I would add, so is good style!)

#4. Wearing too much embellishment or too much distressing/whiskering.

Yes, I wear moderately distressed jeans, and I know there are some who think that whole trend is ridonkulous. We’ll have to agree to disagree on that. However, there is no doubt that wearing jeans with lots of embellishments, excessive rips and tears, dramatic whiskering on the hips, and faded spots in unfortunate areas can add to the frump factor and look like we’re trying too hard.

#5. Tucking jeans that are too wide into your boots.

These days with so many options for legging jeans and skinny jeans, there is absolutely no need to stuff jeans that are too wide into your boots. Not only is it unflattering, it just looks really frumpy-dumpy. If you’re going to tuck your jeans, be sure to have a couple pairs of super skinny styles in your closet that work well with that look. (I love legging jeans for this.)

Ankle-length skinny jeans are also a good way to go because they don’t require you to roll up the hems to fit inside your boots. If you must roll your jeans to fit into boots, create one large cuff, and then pull your socks on over top to hold your pants in place and keep them from looking bulky in your boots.

And while we’re at it, let’s discuss some denim care tips. After all, if you invest in good quality denim, you want them to stay looking good for as long as possible.

How to Care for Denim

• Don’t wash your jeans too often. If they don’t look or smell dirty, put them back in your closet.
• Wash your jeans inside out in cold water and hang to dry to protect the wash as well as the elastin.
• Add vinegar to the water before you wash them the first time to help lock the color in.
• Fold rather than hang your jeans. Supposedly hanging can wear on them over time.

That last one is new to me. I always hang my jeans because I feel like I can see them better that way, and I have more hanging space than folding space. I may have to reconsider that now.

As a part of my ambassadorship with Maui Jim, I received several of their most popular women’s sunglasses styles to try out over the course of the year, and I brought my two favorites with me to Ocean City, NJ for our beach vacation last month.

I’ve been wearing my Orchid frames a lot, but recently I’ve started incorporating these Coco Palms sunglasses into my outfits and I’m obsessed. These are the Tokyo Tortoise frames with the Maui Rose lenses.

I love how the chic cat-eye tortoise shell frames add a touch of glam to my everyday outfits. Large plastic frames have been trending for some time, but they can be tricky to wear. These are the perfect size and shape for a narrower face.

At the beach, I was hyper aware of how the PolarizedPlus2 lenses enhanced my view. Even on cloudy days, my sunglasses helped me see more clearly and removed any glare from the sun on the water so I could enjoy the view of the ocean and read books on my kindle with ease.

We didn’t have the best weather on this vacation, but we tried to make the best of it. The kids spent a lot of time hanging out at the boardwalk, and we enjoyed the decks at our beach house when it was too chilly to be by the water. We spent the evenings reading and playing games.

We pretty much had the beach to ourselves a couple of the mornings, and it was so peaceful and relaxing to sit and enjoy the sights and sounds of the sand and water without people chatting and kids squealing all around us. Those were my favorite moments of the entire trip.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the busyness of life. Sometimes it takes getting away from the daily grind to force myself to slow down and relax and enjoy the view, and my view is never better than with my Maui Jims!
