A new program offering free legal services for patients facing denial of coverage and issues related to social services and benefits is being launched through the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University in in partnership with Northwell Health.

Funded with a $512,000 state grant, the Medical-Legal Partnership, or MLP, will focus on serving underserved, at-risk children and adults, including Medicaid recipients, who can’t afford legal intervention. The partnership will target community health disparities including unsanitary housing conditions, denial of health benefits, domestic violence, access to healthy food and water, lack of consistent or affordable child care and other factors that, despite treatment, may stand in the way of good health.
